Bouncing back strongly after yesterday.

3. Indeed today's postcount was almost triple yesterday's, falling just two short of that mark on 97.

This brings up the concept of a post spike or post canyon. A post spike occurs when one day's postcount is much higher than the days either side of it and a post canyon occurs when one day's postcount is much lower than the days either side of it.

I measure this using the formula:

spike/canyon effect (day x) = p(x)/p(x-1)*p(x)/p(x+1)

where p = postcount

Thus a very high value indicates a spike while a value very close to zero indicates a canyon.

The highest spike since the forum proper started occurred on Dec 13 2004 (spike effect = 7.49). 388 posts were recorded on that day compared with 101 on Dec 12 and 199 on Dec 14.

The deepest canyon is supposedly the above-mentioned April 15 2006 with a score of 0.044 but as mentioned above I think that one is dodgy. Jan 11 2004 with 0.083 is next in line but there might have been technical problems that day too; August 17 2007 is next with 0.0877.

Yesterday (0.102) ranks seventh for the deepest "post canyon" on record, or fourth if suspect entries are discounted.

4. gee whiz, it sounds a bit like the Aust cricket team, 3 for 2, then 3 for 130 or first test England 3 for 517. If there was betting on it the stewards would be called in.

5. This year on April 19, for the first time in the forum's history the daily postcount increased for the sixth consecutive day (54-66-76-86-93-119-138).

The sole run in which the daily postcount decreased for six consecutive days started exactly six years earlier on April 19 2004: 240-186-179-92-77-66-50.

There have been 12 cases where the postcount has increased five days in a row, and eight where it has decreased five days in a row.

If I was a typical Byron Bay new-ager I would say there is a co-incidence or cogruence with the Aussie cricket team fortunes

The identity of the holder of the #2 position for the last six months was the subject of a guessing game in the shoutbox. No-one got it.

Highest posting new user: the most active user to sign up in the last six months was ChoiSeulKi (42) followed by Craig_Hall (33). This category will not include hydras or new accounts for existing posters (where known).

NB A no-post period of six months is required for inclusion in the latter list unless an account has been suspended or there is other strong reason to consider poster inactive as a poster.

The number of inactive (in some sense) top-60 accounts is up three to 17 since last update. Two accounts joined the main inactive list (one through requested suspension) and one joined the lurker list. Of the 14 accounts on both the last list and the previous, two logged on during the last 6 months and one of those posted.

Yes thanks KB, always an intersting read.

11. 2010 posting stats review

2010 was a quiet year for the forum, the quietest of the seven full years since the forum started by a margin of about 24%. However the second half of the year was slightly busier than the first half. All figures are the lowest for the years 2004-10 except where stated otherwise.

These figures are for posts per day total (including CC game posts).

Mean posts per day: 80.7

Median posts per day: 76.

Proportion of days with 100+ posts: 22%

Most commonly recorded daily postcount: 66

Month with most posts: July (3171), ranked 47th out of 84.

Month with fewest posts: February (1439).

Day with most posts: January 3 (183), the =258th highest on record.

Day with fewest posts: February 22 (28), the 18th lowest on record since the forum proper started in Jan 2004.

Most days in a row with 100+ posts: There were five instances of four such days in a row but one of them, Jan 1-4, continued a streak of eight such days (including the last four days of 2009) which was the =34th longest such streak on record.

Most days in a row with <100 posts: Jan 31 to Feb 28 (29), the equal longest since the forum proper started in Jan 2004.

Average posts by day for the year (long term average in brackets):

Sunday 83.8 (104.1)
Friday 82.58 (107.9)
Monday 82.56 (118.3)
Tuesday 81.9 (120.2)
Saturday 81.7 (98.8)
Wednesday 77.4 (116.7)
Thursday 75.2 (114.7)

There was much less variation between different days, even on a proportional basis, than in any other year.

There was a photo-finish between Friday and Monday for second place for the year. Friday required 93 posts on 31 December to move into second and reached that total at 11:59pm; the final postcount for that day was 94. Those in different timezones may have other mileage on this one.

12. What you don't include is maximum percentage of posts by one poster in a thread.

I nominate myself in Janis Joplin, 41 out of 61 posts, whatever % that is..66.66%

13. I think that's been discussed before on this thread - the question is what do you make the minimum thread size to qualify? There are plenty of threads with only 1 post so whoever posted that post has 100% of that thread.

14. I just posted post 20,000 about 15 mins ago. At the current rate of progress, although Bill is in second place, Rincewind would be expected to be the next account across that line, and based on last year's averages that would be projected to occur in late 2014. I post this projection so it can be compared with who does cross that line next and when. These things do change, eg for the first few years of Chesschat I was only about the 5th most active poster.

15. The way Hangman thread is thriving it will overtake most threads unless capital punishment is revoked
