The total post count for October 1 (97) was the same as the total post count for October 2.

The total post count for October 3 (81) was the same as the total post count for October 4.

What are the stats for Photo Caption judges suggesting a ruling is forthcoming when in fact it isn't?
There is no cure for leftism. Its infestation of the host mostly diminishes with age except in the most rabid of specimens.

It is forthcoming; I'm too tired to do it right now but intend to do so within the next 24 hrs.

But I am not too tired to welcome Boris to the top ten posters list! Boris passed pax (who hasn't posted for a few months) at 5:19 pm October 3.

Skill at darts is a sign of an ill-spent youth. Being in the top 10 posters list is a sign of a ill-spent life.

AO has posted that his forum was at "about 50% of the other chess forum" based on post stats for the four days Sep 30 - Oct 3. While four days is not a meaningful sample anyway, we averaged 95 ppd for those four days while they averaged 35.25 and thus they were at 37.1% of our rate, not "about 50%".

However, their average post rate excluding correspondence game posts for September (40.8) was easily their highest on record. Their market share for that month was their second-highest on record. There continues to be no evidence that competition is affecting posting rates here.

I doubt if we have ever before had 2 consecutive days of the same post total followed by 2 consecutive days of the same (but different) post total! Can Kevin confirm this (when he is less tired)?

Correct; this has never happened before. The odds against this pattern being displayed on four consecutive days are about 12,000 to 1, but as the forum has been going for about 2,100 days in its current form it is nothing too unusual when noticed post hoc.

Just noting for those who follow this thread but not the Toolbox-Detox thread that a number of spurious comparisons posted on the other forum have been debunked in recent posts that I have put on the Toolbox-Detox thread.

    In particular:

    * A claim that their post-rate for a given week was "roughly two thirds" of ours was riddled with calculation blunders, false assumptions and invalid comparisons; the actual figure was less than 42% and perhaps less than 40% if the time scales were made exactly comparable.

    * A claim about flagging post-rates here based on that week is wrong; it was simply a quiet week and our average for November will most likely come in over 100 ppd excluding correspondence games although we will know for sure tomorrow.

    * A false claim that there had been 60 "banning notices" in the past 60 weeks here has been debunked. There were actually 40 fresh bans (including shoutbox-only bans) logged in that period of which 31 involved two repeat offenders, one of whom is now permanently banned.

    * A comment by Alex that he would be surprised if we had as many members currently active as his site is amusing given that we have well over twice as many.

For the moment I will probably continue shooting down false claims about site comparisons that are posted "over there" on the Toolbox-Detox thread rather than this one, but if any serious poster would prefer me to post them on this one I'll consider doing so.

Half-yearly forum stats update. (There will be a yearly thingy about total post rates in a few days.)

    Total posts: 255,086
Top 10 posters: 93303 posts, 36.6% of total posts
However "total posts" includes correspondence game posts of which there are now 34504. Top 10 posters total does not include correspondence game posts.
    Posts since last update: 20433
1044 accounts have undeleted posts (about 60 of these are hydras or spammers, mostly banned).
Post-rate since last update excluding correspondence games: 100.3 ppd (down <1%)

(Post-rate for Toolbox excluding correspondence games for this period: 36.6 ppd, up 62%.)

NB A no-post period of six months is required for inclusion in the latter list unless an account has been suspended or there is other strong reason to consider poster inactive as a poster.

Number of inactive (in some sense) top-60 accounts is up one since last update. One account was removed from the main list and one from the lurker list because the poster fell out of the top 60. One poster whose main account is inactive posted from a second account in the last month. One account was added to the lurker list and three to the main list. One account was transferred from the main list to the lurker list. Of the 12 accounts appearing in both periods, four logged in and one posted during this period.

Very thorough, as usual Kevin. Thanks for the effort. RW, I am in danger of joining those with a mis-spent life. Eek!

    2009 posting stats review

These figures are for posts per day total (including CC game posts).

Median posts per day: 115, up marginally from 114.5 last year, and the second-highest behind 2006 (141).

Proportion of days with 100+ posts: 65.7%, up from 62.8% and the second-highest behind 2006 (78.1%).

Mean posts per day: 118.3. This is actually down 7% on the 2008 figure but the main reason for this is that the 2008 figure was distorted by the brief but massive rush in posting at the start of the Teens Forum.

Month with most posts: February (4459), the 12th highest on record.

Month with fewest posts: August (3051), the 17th lowest on record since the forum proper started in Jan 2004.

Day with most posts: February 21 (302), the 19th highest on record.

Day with fewest posts: June 7 (42), the equal 54th lowest on record since the forum proper started in Jan 2004.

Most days in a row with 100+ posts: Jan 25 to Feb 13 (20), the equal fourth longest on record.

Most days in a row with <100 posts: Aug 4 to 20 (17), the third longest since the forum proper started in Jan 2004.

Average posts by day for the year (long term average in brackets):

    Tuesday 126.2 (126.3)
    Monday 123.5 (124.0)
    Wednesday 122.4 (123.1)
    Thursday 118.6 (121.0)
    Saturday 115.7 (101.5)
    Sunday 115.0 (107.3)
    Friday 106.8 (112.0)

So there is a bit of a trend this year of people posting a bit less on Thursday and Friday but more on Saturday and Sunday.

    Curious

It's curious that Tuesday tops the list in posts because Tuesday is the night that lots of chess clubs meet, including norths.
