And now the list you've all been waiting for ...

    Chesschat's Top Ten Lurkers

These are the ten longest currently established members who have never posted. The length of their lurking is indicated by the current difference between join date and date last posted. For instance if one of our more notable lurkers, moggy, logs in again, moggy will have a revised lurk score of over five years and will go to the top of the pile.

    1. lembitvahesaar 1790 days (5/2/04 - 30/12/08)
    2. Aeschylus 1719 days (9/5/04 - 8/1/09)
    3. Btowner 1335 days (17/2/05 - 14/10/08)
    4. moggy 1198 days (1/1/04 - 13/4/07)
    5. Gobberlerra 1180 days (29/3/05 - 21/6/08)
    6. maskaret 1138 days (23/10/05 - 4/12/08)
    7. remoteboo 1063 days (3/1/2004 - 2/12/06)
    8. dezayu 1019 days (16/6/05 - 31/3/08)
    9. cayennepepperly 973 days (26/11/04 - 5/7/07)
    10. beaver 914 days (1/3/2005 - 1/9/2007)

moggy is the only member to join in the ACF forum influx on 1-1-2004 who has never posted.

Treasure these lurkers and honour them when they appear online, for you never know what might happen if one day they hit the send button. Jono was also a 1-1-2004 transferral from the old ACF forum and went 1189 days without posting. He is now #6 on our top poster list by postcount!

I'd like to give a big plug for the online calculator I used to get these differences, mainly because the other half dozen or so I tried were so ghastly! (Slow-loading, not working, taking too long, etc)

Kerry posted a few days ago.

ursogr8 has racked up 869 days of lurking thus far since last posting but I am unsure if this is a record for post-posting lurking or not, nor can I (yet) think of an easy way to check it.

I think Starter is suffering post traumatic stress syndrome due to all that abuse from Bill and Gunnar, that why changed name, wants to deny his previous dreadful experience and not posting. He needs rehabilitation, counselling. The UN HIgh Commissioner for War Crimes should investigate for crimes against humanity.

I thought of one and was able to get the leaders very easily using a bit of Excel mucking about.

I played chess with that longwhip guy and beat him if my memory is correct. Was that 3 years or so ago, blimey. And fancy silly Starter purving for almost 3 years without sprouting - something wrong there - you guys definitely should have apologised.

    You did, in 11 moves.

By the way the "last post" date includes posts in correspondence games, even though correspondence games are not counted as posts for postcount purposes.

However if someone has only played in correspondence games then they would be in the previous lurker list as their postcount would be zero.

I think the activity in both shouts and threads is increasing on a daily basis, plus new members etc, are you anticipating some records to be broken somewhere at this point Kevin?

Posting activity in threads has been significantly above average for this month, especially over the last week or so, but by no means record-threatening. Actually the busiest day this year so far was Jan 1 with 217 posts.

The shoutbox is not well equipped for monitoring records so I cannot comment on that.

I will soon be in a position to assess rates of real new member signups over time but am not there yet.

By the way I am closing in (after many hours of work banning old spammers) on a reasonably accurate answer to one of the biggest statistical questions on this forum:

How many genuine members do we have?

    (ie excluding spammers and hydras)

(This one has been asked a few times but it has not been possible to answer it at all accurately before.)

    that will be interesting indeed!!!
Why not make a poll, so we can see who will be closer to the actual number?
ok I give you my prediction now, and I have included banned members since you didnt mention banned members.

its going to be hmmm, let me think again! ok FINAL and presuming you are not going to give any clues between now and the final announcement

    my prediction is

    897 members

You guys from admin excluded of course!

    Poll added

    Nearest guess competition rules

    1. An account is a "real member" if it is none of the following:
    * spammer (including suspected spammers banned without ever posting)
    * hacker
    * hydra of another account (banned or unbanned)
    * failed signup attempt by a person who later signed up successfully
    * account awaiting email confirmation

    2. To be eligible for the nearest-guess competition a member must vote on the poll before it closes. Admins and mods are not eligible.

    3. All voters will be assumed to have voted for the midpoint of the range selected unless the voter specifies a different guess in a post to this thread by 10 pm Sunday ADST.

    4. Each voter may specify one guess only and may not edit that guess.

    5. I will produce an official estimate of the number of real members and post it after voting closes.

    6. The winner is the guess closest to my official estimate. If two guesses are equally close then whichever guesser voted first wins.

    7. As much correspondence as you like will be entered into (provided it is on-topic and does not mention ignowars) and if I am convinced my estimate is wrong I will change it!

    Hi Kev

Would it be possible for regular member to avoid guessing and start counting (not sure why they would bother except to cheat and waste time ) by going to Member List and then just scrolling trough the alphabet adding legit-looking members one by one?
