    It appears that I made 19 posts there that were not culled by the junta, also around the December timeframe.
    So what's your excuse? To run like the devil's chasing you.

    As some members would be aware Bill and I have been on an expedition to the Toolbox this month (actually my own presence there started a few days before the end of last month). As I am currently banned from there I cannot post the appropriate statistics over there so I shall do so here instead.

    As has been noted above the Toolbox wallowed below 10 posts per day for each of April, May and June. In July its post-rate was about 2.8 times higher than the average for those three months. However, the credit for that belongs entirely or nearly so to our incursion, since of the 801 undeleted non-spam posts added there during the month, 538 (67%) have been either part of or related to the incursion - take those away and the post-rate there slumps to 8.5 per day. Of course, I acknowledge that arguing with us may have taken away energy the suspects there might have put into making other posts, but OTOH it may have also increased their interest in posting and checking the forum regularly.

    The leading posters in the Toolbox in the last month were Trevor Stanning (MOZ/Virgil, 159 posts) myself (The Arbiter/lotlizard, 108), Bill Gletsos (101), [Alex] (Arrogant-One/at least one post by admin, 89), David Beaumont (firegoat7, 83) - 67% of posts by just five users. Matthew Sweeney (Inonoclast) made 33 posts and Phil Donnelly (phild707) has made 40. (These stats are according to the Toolbox search function.)

    Counting a "banning" as any instance of the suspension of one or more accounts owned by the same person, there were a total of at least eleven bans imposed on five different account-holders during this period. Two of these bans were compensatory bans after inconsistencies were demonstrated and both of these were with the banned account holder's consent (and applied to irrelevant hydras only). Of the nine nonconsensual banning actions affecting three different people, one was a simultaneous ban on three account-holders and another was a simultaneous ban on two, so there were six separate banning actions. Of these six, the Toolbox staff themselves revoked or modified three and apologised for a fourth that were demonstrated to be factually incorrect or inconsistent. One of the other two also had a factually incorrect component and both of the other two were clearly inconsistent.

    By comparison, of all the bannings imposed in Chesschat history, only one needed to be revoked because it was clearly a misunderstanding, and another was shortened because it was excessive.

    Our own average post-rate went down slightly this month (nine posts per day) and about 40% of this decrease was attributable specifically to me posting less on account of spending so much time having fun at the expense of said Toolbox. (Bill's post rate here was unaffected by posting there, and was actually higher for this month than the month before.) My total number of posts on both forums combined was almost exactly the same across the two months.

    As I am extremely likely to be banned from the Toolbox permanently within the next week it will probably not be long before the normal order of comparative statistics is restored.

    The following statistics on banned accounts may amuse some.

    There are currently 3264 permanently banned accounts listed in the list of banned accounts, and one temporarily banned account (Axiom). Some spammer accounts that are not banned specifically have been denied access through the banning of the IPs they access the site from and also a very small number of banned accounts don't show in the banned user list for some unknown reason (this is known to include three hydras).

    Of the 3267 known permanently banned accounts, the breakdown is roughly as follows:

    * banned primary accounts: 6
    * accounts suspended at user's request: 4
    * banned hacker accounts: 4
    * test account created to test abilities of banned accounts: 1
    * banned hydras or suspected hydras: 125
    * banned spammers or suspected spammers:3127

    Of the 125 banned hydras, the ownership of some is clearer than others but about 68 are believed to belong to Arrogant-One, 29 to Axiom, 14 to Sweeney, and 4 to HappyFriend. The remaining eleven banned hydras are shared between seven owners, one of whom has their primary account banned and another of whom is unknown.

    The category "spammers" includes a handful of political or otherwise strange nutters (about four) but most were either commercial spammers for websites or products or were banned before they could spam. Many may not have actually posted spam if not banned; many spammers sign up to forums just to get picked up by search engines.

    Some common words in spammer names, not surprisingly, include "sex" (50), "Viagra" (35), "girl" (26), and "porn" (21). "Amatuer" (or abbreviation thereof) is also common but that was because of a string of spammers with versions of the same names from one source.

    This forum banned its first spammers, 1-siriusok-1 and casino7779 , on 25 July 2006. The following shows the growth of spammer bannings since then, although from time to time various control measures implemented by the admins have stemmed the tide for a while:

    Code:
    07-2006     7
    08-2006     58
    09-2006     73
    10-2006     77
    11-2006     157 (=5th worst on record)
    12-2006     60
    01-2007     67
    02-2007     79
    03-2007     113
    04-2007     105
    05-2007     123
    06-2007     140
    07-2007     136
    08-2007     90
    09-2007     35
    10-2007     123
    11-2007     86
    12-2007     100
    01-2008     133
    02-2008     135
    03-2008     180 (4th worst on record)
    04-2008     181 (3rd worst on record)
    05-2008     110
    06-2008     133
    07-2008 157 (=5th worst on record but see below)
    08-2008     255 (worst on record)
    09-2008     188 (2nd worst on record)
    10-2008     26 in one day!
    1 Oct 2008 (which has just become yesterday) with 26 spammer bannings is actually not the record; on 16-07-2008 50 spammers were banned, but this was mainly because a batch of them were found through IP matching by Bill, some of which had been idle for months. However 1-10-2008 is the worst day I can recall in terms of numbers of spammers on at once and getting through and posting.

    In all, Bill has banned 1313 spammers, I've banned 1149, Rincewind's banned 578, Dilly Boy 63, JGB 22 and spammer Estrasxssx had the unique honour of being shown the door by the site owner.

    My stats have improved by 12* with that many spammers posting a new thread between 1:30 and 8:30 today. If that rates keeps up we will be pushing the 50 in one day record today and we already have a good head start on the 26 of yesterday.

    Almost without exception this latest wave of spammers aer registering with @gmail.com account. I suggested to the moderators some time ago that this domain is a candidate for banning due to the spammer activity but we were reluctant to ban it due to the large number of members who use it (less than 30 people with more than 3 posts and have been active since 1-1-2008, but still a substantial number). Unfortunately it seems that domain based banning is the only way to effective limit the current increase in spam traffic.

    Anyone using a free email address for registration might be well advised to consider changing over to a work or ISP based address. Although at this time there are no other major free email providers being used by the spammers, that may well change ni the near future.

    * Edit: Make that 14.

    Yes, a 27th spammer was banned yesterday while I was compiling that post, and I have just banned #26 for today. Something has suddenly made them go quite feral.

    There have now been 43 spammers banned today. This is the second largest number of spammer bannings on a day in Chesschat history and the one ahead of it was the one mentioned above when Bill banned a long list that had been found by IP searching. So today is the worst day for spammer signups in the forum's history.

    For those wondering why the gmail block hasn't cut numbers, it hasn't been implemented yet as we are giving those affected some time to adjust before implementation.

    I'd like to know how many Shoutbox shouts has David Flude. Did he just double his number with a mad impulsive 10 minutes? Please don't take offence David - all just good-natured, I can assure you.

    Strangely there doesn't seem to be any way for mods to view the shout counts of shouters outside the top ten shouters list. I am unsure if admins can do this.

    I don't know of an easy way. A user can see their own shout count when they look at the shoutbox and if David doesn't mind and could be bothered enough to look and post, I'm sure he can answer Gunner's question.

    Thanks for investigating anyway, Kev.

    David, if you're so inclined to either discover the answer for yourself and/ or be a sport and let us know, you can determine the answer yourself by clicking on the word 'shoutbox' itself (from the chesschat home page). Otherwise the answer will remain remain vaulted in mystery and the unknown (much like the workings of Axiom's mind).

    It's just belatedly come to my attention that around 10pm yesterday justaknight took over as the new leader of the shoutbox from Axiom (who is currently banned from the shoutbox) on a score of 19 017. Gunner Duggan is currently third on 16 741.

    Well you are #19 on the postcount list, and since two of those ahead of you are inactive, two banned and two suspended, you may well at least make it to the top 15 some day.

    I noted earlier this evening that TheJoker has 154 out of 570 posts (27%) on the same thread (free market, media etc). This narrowly exceeds Axiom who has 1042 out of 4032 (25.8%) on the Information War thread.

    Both stats are a little bit misleading since both threads are frequently used by the mods to lump material with similar subject matter when it springs up on a range of threads but I would be interested to know of any other poster who has such a high proportion of their output on a single thread, except where that thread is devoted to an event they have organised. (For instance over half the Elwood Bendigo account's posts are on the same thread.)
