It was somewhat after it. The nationwide ban policy was passed in March 2006 coming into force April 2006. Most of the posts about it here were over by June 2006 although there was a low-level resurfacing of the issue in late 2006 when [Alex] was briefly banned by CAQ.

Sweeney's ACCF forum started in July 2006. Of the active posters with 10 or more posts who last visited in either of those periods, only three (AO, PHAT and Cat) have any connection to ACCF or Sweeney-related issues. Including those who last posted in that period you could add Alan Shore and Steve K and remove PHAT. Take all those out and the NLV is still slightly higher than average but probably not significantly so, so I suspect the main cause of the slight drop around that time is just a blip in recruitment levels - which is probably for no particular clear reason, just as there is no obvious reason why there is a spike in recruitment in late 05.

Around about the time I wrote #149 some Toolboxers got very excited upon noting that their forum's post-count-rate appeared to be rising rapidly while ours had gone down; the suggestion was that they were successfully pinching our discussion traffic. A thread was even started to push the idea that their forum was growing and that poster departures had caused a loss of posts at chesschat.

In particular, the following stats for posts per day (excluding correspondence game moves) were available at that stage:

    Between 18-07-2007 and 23-10-2007: chesschat 90 ppd, Toolbox 14.6
    Between 23-10-2007 and 29-12-2007: chesschat 78 ppd, Toolbox 22.7

I have just checked stats for the three months Jan-Mar 2008 and they are ...

Chesschat 106.8 ppd, Toolbox 20 ppd

Toolbox market share for last three months is 15.7%

Concerning the increase in post-rates for chesschat compared to late 2007 (it's back to about where it was earlier that year now), I suspect that an increased level of debate on politics threads in the non-chess section has had a fair bit to do with it, but there have also been some long chess threads too.

On 01-05-2008 at 4:09pm Jono entered the top ten by postcount. Jono is the first new entry to the top ten since Gunner Duggan kicked down the door on 9 April last year. At this time, Jono's posting career on the board was five days old.

For a long time, pax was in 11th place but Jono passed him less than a hundred posts before he could enter the top ten. At current posting rates, pax would be expected to reach the top ten in the second half of this year.

Any easy way to tell how Axiom and Jono's figures would look if excluding the posts were they simply cut and paste some word from an off-site article?

I reckon Axiom's tally would be at least 600 lower, and that is a very conservative estimate.

Total posts lead change at 11:52PM at 11,945 posts.

With far less silly yahoos on this board for him to argue with than used to be the case, Bill has not needed to maintain his former post rate.

Another causal factor is that posting activity on my other forum has declined over the past two years. Also at one stage we were logging all moderator actions over there and also defending them in debate with posters - then the site admin directed us to only log and/or defend in unusual cases. That plus the relatively spamproof nature of the php3 used over there has given me more time to post here - even though I've been probably busier both in work and chess admin terms in the last two years than for a while!

Half-yearly forum stats update time again.

    Total posts: 192,239
Top 10 posters: 73465 posts, 38.22% of total posts.
However "total posts" includes correspondence game posts of which there are now 27256. Top 10 posters total does not include correspondence game posts.
    Posts since last update: 22744
813 accounts have undeleted posts (a few dozen of these are hydras).
Post-rate since last update excluding correspondence games: 98.1 ppd (up 16%)

(Post-rate for Toolbox excluding correspondence games and undeleted spam since last update : 14.9 ppd. This is down 15% from the previous period but the decline has been much greater over recent months. I shall be graphing and commenting on this shortly.)

    7. ursogr8 (last post 10-07-2006)
    38. JGB (last post 02-06-2007)

NB A no-post period of six months is required for inclusion in the latter list unless an account has been suspended or there is other strong reason to consider poster inactive as a poster.

Number of inactive (in some sense) top-60 accounts is up one from 18 to 19 since last update (garethbcharles was incorrectly omitted from previous inactive list). Four accounts were removed from the list (three because they resumed posting (in one case under a different account name), one because the poster fell out of the top 60). Five accounts were added (one of these to the lurker list). Two accounts were transferred from the lurker list to the main list. Of the 14 accounts appearing on both lists, one posted between the two lists but then deleted that post (Alan Shore), and four others not on the lurker list logged in.

Change to top ten section: In the last six months the top ten lists have become dominated by non-chess threads, and to a lesser extent threads about the forum. Therefore I am adding chess-specific sections.

The graph below displays a mean postcount-per-day comparison between Chesschat (shown in blue) and "the Toolbox" (shown in tasteful pink bound to meet with Axiom's approval.) The figures do not include correspondence game posts, and also exclude a small number of known undeleted spams.

Note that the first two columns represent periods longer than a month (18 July - 23 Oct and 23 Oct - 29 Dec 2007 respectively). Since then, I have been keeping tabs on the relevant average postcounts at approximately the end of each month.

This shows that the Toolbox appears to have peaked around January this year (or possibly December last) at around 25 posts per day and has since crashed to around nine posts per day in May - June, losing 64% of its post rate in the second half of its first year of existence. Chesschat's post rate fluctuates to some degree from month to month (large tournaments tend to drive it up) and has been slightly (19%) lower in May-June than in January but nothing like the decline seen in the Toolbox.

In a post further up I commented that it looked likely the Toolbox would easily surpass the 10% market share goalpost I originally (somewhat harshly) said it would be doing well to reach. Curiously, while it is already guaranteed of beating that mark for the year as a whole, it has been below it for the last two months combined.

In sympathy with our struggling competitor I have generously donated dozens of hydra posts and furthermore fuelled a currently running attempt to put me on some kind of kangaroo-court trial for the heinous offence of having hydras in the Toolbox. But I am not sure even that will return them to the glory days when they could realistically dream of someday being 30% as active as us.

The causes of any decline in a forum's post-rate are usually complex, and in this case Matthew Sweeney's relative inactivity and MOZ's time offline played some role. But I think the major factors have been:

    * Mismanagement by Arrogant-One of posters from here who go there, resulting in several posting for a brief time but not staying as active posters.

    * Alex's attacks on this site as documented elsewhere, causing some posters to leave.

I will be interested to see if they can rebuild, but somehow I doubt even my assistance can save them!

I believe I contributed to that activity in late December early January by trying to enlighten the clueless and the logic challenged. They proved however to be beyond hope.

I think December was my busiest month at the toolbox too with something like 20.
