    Any publicity is...???

    From The Closet GM:

    Board Stupid

Woohoo!! Chess, at long last, is sexy. Not!

In a mainly unsympathetic article (the Gaft v Beaumont incident is mentioned), Inside Sport magazine has a special report on the Mt Buller Australian Open tournament. Check out the August 2005 issue with the absolutely delicious Jade Garel on the cover. See pic on the right.

I won't ruin the suspense but here's some funny lines. "There's GM Hans-Joachim Hecht, a German Ken Done with a moustache, boat shoes and a very bad shirt". And in describing our Malcolm Pyke, "a dead ringer for a flame-haired Ming the Merciless".

Sydney player, Trent Parker, and Tasmania's Kevin Bonham, are featured in full frontal photography.

    All good, All funny!!

Hahaha. I didn't see this post so I actually found out when I clicked on AR's blog to see his stuff about the Sweeney banning.

I made the following post in the Confessional thread of one of my other forums:

I confess to extended perusal of certain pages of the August 2005 issue of Inside Sport.

Normally I wouldn't be seen dead reading such a tacky piece of ocker bikini-porn but the current issue features a remarkably glamorous picture of somebody very sexy indeed.

it would require someone to scan the pics from the mag. Also I not sure about copyright laws either. Yes, go to the newsagents and treat it like a library

Split this because I thought the article deserved more attention and discussion.

Although harsh and prone to predictable stereotypes and the odd cliche, the piece is otherwise quite well written and fun to read. The author would probably acquit himself well in a flamewar and has a good eye for the ridiculous.

There are several factual errors, though I suspect the errors are not all the writer's fault. A rating of 2500 does not make you one of the world's top 200. Both Kasparov - Deep Blue matches are incorrectly stated as being seven games long (both were six). It was not true that "All except Wei can win the championship" (only Sedina, D'Amore, Kengis and Hecht were in contention - Johansen, Arlandi and Jordan were not). Jordan beat Wei contrary to what is stated. And the caption to Sedina - D'Amore wrongly suggests Sedina won, although the text accurately reports that they drew.
The account of the Doeberl punchup is colourful - I have no idea how accurate it is.

The author of the article checked the details of this event with me, so if there are any inaccuracies (and Firegoat would be the one to point them out) then they may be due to me. BTW I haven't seen the article so I don't know what the author actually did write.

    will post text soon

    Hello Everyone,
I have the article, but no time to post at the moment, at least at that length.
Will be home from work in about 4 hours, and will post some of it. If anyone can suggest in my absence what can and cannot be posted, that would be appreciated,

Take care all and God bless, Macavity

    The article?

    Hi everyone,
In any case, does anyone once again want to know more of the article, and would be delighted for anyone who actually knows how much I can post of it without getting the site into trouble,

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

macavity, i reckon it ok for us to scan in the article and link here.
i'm sure it's ok (copyright wise) for the chess community to keep electronic copies of these articles as they are very interesting for future reference (will try contacting publisher for permission as well). (btw. these are external links anyway

i got a copy this morning. the chess article as very interesting.
the relevant pages below (the pictures are quite large though. may try to reduce them later).

this issue is generally quite a good one so it's worth purchasing for the other articles (not mentioning pictures!). the article on pool champ efren reyes is very interesting. (i've seen him on tv alot but didn't know much his background apart from being Filipino) he is also shown in front of a chess board (see last link).

There is a 3rd mention of chess in the same magazine. Former RL star Ellery Hanley enjoys chess during his downtimes.

just read that bit on hanley now (p35).

with the scanned images if you can't read the words
hover your mouse over the bottom right and you'll get a zoom in button
    or similar.
