    and just for fun...

And just for fun, here is the report on their lightning championships held last Wednesday:

The Dandenong Lightning Championship 2005 was won by Milenko Lojanica with
    8.5 / 9 ahead of Mehmedalija Dizdarevic on 8.

These two were well ahead the others and it was clear with two rounds
remaining that the title would go to one of them.
In an interesting final round Dizdarevic disposed of Amir Mahic very
quickly which meant Milenko had to defeat Richard Voon to claim outright
victory. Voon looked to have a good position and was about 30s ahead on
time. But Voon missed a tactic and spent too long trying to retrieve the
situation, only to lose on time and hand Milenko the title.
Following is the crosstable for the Lightning Championship.

    Regards: Garry Lycett

    round 1 report

    Dandenong Grades Tournaments 2005

52 players entered the Dandenong Grades tournaments this year, making up
five 8-player round robins with the remaining 12-players in a seven round
    swiss.
This years event is much stronger than in previous years with much higher
average ratings in each grade. This is evidenced by the fact that last
years winners in A and C-Grade are now playing in a lower grade. Indeed
only one of the players in last years A-Grade event is playing in it this
year, and he only scraped in as the lowest rated player, after his rating
improved over 50-points !! There is also only one player from last years
B-Grade event who held his ground, with all others now in lower grades.

The Premier Grade will be FIDE Rated, and with six of the eight players
having FIDE ratings is a good opportunity for the remaining two to get a
FIDE rating. Ascaro Pecori (2067) is top seed, but with the event having an
average ACF rating of 1968 he will have a lot of tough battles. Zdravko
Lojanica (1885) is the bottom seed, but he is coming off equal first in the
Autumn Open so is in good form.
The first round eventually concluded at about 12.30am when Mehmedalija
Dizdarevic finally overcame Malcolm Pyke. Malcolm had sacrificed a piece
for three pawns that looked too far advanced to be stopped. But
Mehmedalija defended very well and when the smoke cleared his bishop and
pawn were going to win against Malcolm's two remaining pawns. Later
analysis (Fritz) will possibly find ways Malcolm could have won or drawn,
but as both players were playing with only the 30-second increments there
were no doubt mistakes on both sides in what was a very complicated
position. But it made for very good viewing.

A-Grade has Frank Silas (1872) as top seed with his main opposition coming
from former club champion Miralem Campara (1843). But both could only draw
their first round games. Tahir Lushaj (1745) and newcomer Hong Lin (1701)
were the two winners in this groups first round.

B-Grade should be a close event with only 66-points between top seed Eddie
Kocjancic (1601) and bottom seed Bob Parrot (1535). Eddie won the B-Grade
last year but will be challenged this year by Matthew Potter and newcomer
T.G Pramod, who we know nothing about but his win over Don Maciulaitis was
    impressive.

C-Grade should also be a hard fought event, Bahri Senturk (1533) is top
seed but lost in round one to Victor Lane (1449). Mirko Kudric (1436) is
the bottom seed but if in form could go close. This is probably the hardest
to pick as anyone in this group is capable of beating anyone else, it will
come down to who is in the best form at the moment.

D-Grade has Daniel Jonas (1416) as top seed but his last tournament result
was very poor after a six month break and Michael Potter (1327) , Craig
Baxter (1272) and Peter Keefe (1341) would all be thinking they are a
    chance to win this.

E-Grade is a swiss event due to having twelve players. The two youngsters,
Daniel Potter (1240) and Phillip Drew (1223), both think they should win
this and both won in the first round. But they don't want to get too
overconfident, Geoff Lee (1143) made a welcome return to form with a
dazzling display against Frank Drazzi (1252) and Albert Lamech (1223) were
the other first round winners. And Graham McEachern (1243) has improved a
lot recently to be no pushover.

    Regards: Garry Lycett

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

    Round 2 report

    Dandenong Grades Tournaments 2005

A reminder that the Dandenong Chess Club website can be found at:
www.dandychess.org.au with all the details of the club, 2005 tournaments
and current tournament results and pairings.

The second round of the Grades Event saw the lowest rated player up
against the highest rated player in each of the five round-robin
    tournaments.

An indication of how closely contested these tournaments are is that in the
"Premier", "A-Grade" and "B-Grade" the lowest rated player won , with
Zdravko Lojanica, Mendel Armerman and Bob Parrot causing upsets against
Ascaro Pecori, Frank Silas and Eddie Kocjancic respectively. In "C-Grade"
Mirko Kudric held Bahri Senturk to a draw and it was only in "D-Grade" that
the highest rated player was victorious with Daniel Jonas defeating Craig
Baxter. Even in the "E-Grade" Swiss tournament the top seeds were both
    beaten.
Both Mendel and Bob have provided their games for the next club newsletter
to show the rest of us how it's done.

The Premier Grade leaders are Mehmedalija Dizdarevic, Richard Voon and
Zdravko Lojanica on 1. But there are two postponed games; Pecori v Machell
and Pyke v Machell to be taken into account. Round 2 saw Milenko Lojanica
win comfortably against Abdulwahab Rashid and although he tried hard
Mehmedalija Dizdarevic could not break through Richard Voons defences and
the game was drawn. But most attention was on the game where Zdravko
Lojanica sacrificed a piece for 3-pawns against Ascaro Pecori. Despite
defending grimly against the well advanced pawns Ascaro had to concede
    defeat in the end.

A-Grade saw newcomer Hong Lin as the only player to go to 2-points
following his win over Garry Lycett. Sadedin Redzepagic and Tahir Lushaj
moved to 1 whilst Mendel Armerman got his first point with a very
impressive 21-move win over top seed Frank Silas.

B-Grade has three leaders with T.G.Pramod, Matthew Potter and Bob Parrot
all on 2. Bob had a good win against top seed Eddie Kocjancic, who now has
an important game against Matthew Potter next week to stay in touch.

C-Grade will likely provide an upset winner. The two leaders on 2, Chris
Potter and Victor Lane, are both rated in the bottom four players.
Meanwhile the two top seeds have only a point between them, and play each
    other next week.

D-Grade is the only one of the six tournaments in which the top seed is
actually leading, although the second seed is on zero. On 2 is Daniel Jonas
a -point ahead of George Tolpigin. Peter Keefe on 1-point with a postponed
    game could catch Daniel.

E-Grade had a draw between the two favorites Daniel Potter and Phillip
Drew, this puts them -point behind Albert Lamech who leads on 2-points.

    Regards: Garry Lycett

Take care all and God Bless, Macavity

Macavity, when you next meet that Voon chap ask him if he remembers about 30 years ago in Sydney being attacked by a Ukrainian with a chair and he rushes with a few quick jabs to make him drop it? They were gambling on a game while an Aussie championship was on I think it was.
