Box Hill calendar 2005 2nd half

The next major event at Box Hill is the 2005 WINTER Interclub.
It looks at this stage that Box Hill will field 2 A Grade teams, 5 B Grade teams, and 7 C Grade teams.
    Each team has four players.
CV does not intend a D Grade this year, so many of our D-Graders will be 'promoted'.

Entries from other Clubs are encouraged.
I expect quite a few from Dark Horse (and I hope they have put their transfers in).
Also hoping for Dandenong, Melbourne, Serbia, Croydon, Bosnia and perhaps Elwood.

Entries in by Friday 8 July for the first round 15 July.

    regards

    RAINBOW Championships

The top grade of the 2005 Box Hill RAINBOW (grades) championships is a little stronger than last year; and this is obviously a step in the right direction for our Tuesday evening club night.

In the ORANGE grade, a welcome entrant is Gary Bekker who we have not seen around the Club for a while.

Full results from round 1 can be viewed through the link.

We have moved on from round 1 to rounds 2 and 3 with a few adjustments to the field in this event which is essentially 5 divisions, each a round-robin; no intermingling. The problem at this time of the year with such events is winter illness and education committments start to take priority over chess!
Anyhow, the fields have settled down now and some good battles were seen on Tuesday night.
The RED (top) division of the RAINBOW tournament has got lucky in that the vacancy caused by one drop-out is now filled admirably by a recent arrival in Australia who comes from as far away as Coburg to play at our Club. He has a good game against Marcus Raine until hostilities finished in a draw (a symmetrical English_Catalan variant).

Oh the joy of someone who can estimate correctly. The actual field size turned out to be 60!.

This size was about 30% up on the previous two ROOKIES and QUEENS Cup events, and both pleased and stretched the organisers.
James Morris earned his name on yet another ROOKIES badge apinned to the ROOKIES trophy that is actually a shield.
Jenny Fan won the QUEENS for the month of August.
The adult prize fund was won again by Leon Kempen, this time from Marcus Raine; Leon says it pays for the petrol, as he comes from Watsonia.

Prize-winners in divisions b,c,d,e,f,and g will be listed this week on the Box hill web-site; in a hurry to get home to the gin_and_tonic the Captain left the SP files behind.

The crowd of visitors was dramatic. Very few vacant seats left around the circumference of our large hall. When we were 'inspected' by Gary Bekker, he remarked that it was a very busy chess happening.

Did we make any mistakes? (It now pays to own up to these early before the Blogger_makers feel the pressure to fill their columns.) Well, yes, we did neglact to advertise a starting time on the flyer and the web-site. Only trapped one entrant though...so nearly scot-free.

Thanks due to a lot of people...perhaps Kerry can list?

    Box Hill Calandar second half

Yes it was a terrific turn up by 60 competitors - many of whom have not played in a Rookie's Cup before. There were also a large number of parents watching the games.

Thanks to all the people who helped today!

First, thanks to the Potter boys who had all the boards and clocks set up by the time I came back with goodies for the tea-room at 12.00 pm.

The 12.30 start was a little late - as there were so many late entrants. (We were still entering 6 players details after the first round had started at 1.00 pm).

Thanks are due to Christine, Linda and other mums who had a busy time in the tea -room today.

A wonderful job was undertaken by Gerrit Hartland, as usual: a few arbitering queries by players today.

Thanks to Trevor in taking the money and entering the scores, as well as finalising the prize list with Gerry.

A great job was done by a new mum - whose name I didn't catch and later by Dominic Canale's dad in taking the scores.

Little India and her friend Lauren drew the lucky numbers for the winners of the lightning round - the prizes being the fabled Box Hill doughnuts - a highly sought after prize!!!

Thanks to the all the competitors who helped tidy away the boards after the competition.

Lastly, thanks to Sean who will post the final results shortly.

Remember last year when I pressing for Chris Wallis' rating to be specially re-calculated before the 2004 VIC OPEN? Well, you resisted then. Keep an eye on this new one (RAPID).

This Eugene Schon (sorry, dont know how to do Ooomlaut) is vastly underated, a 1200 defeating a 2100 I'm trying to imagine what his new rating will be like. I think you meant SChon rather than Walis

Turnout for the ROOKIES and QUEENS cup is limited a little by the School Hols....but strong sompetition for the adults money prize and for the ROOKIES shield.

Games started at 12.45 even though we forgot to list this on the flyer.
    A few arrived late.

We are being treated to an exhibition which I believe is armour-piercing; but I don't want to ask for more description. But something keeps glinting in the sunlight.

Can James Morris win his third ROOKIES and thus keep the SHIELD? Or will Jesse Jager upset this well laid plan.
