    African Chess Website

This one is new to me - just spotted it on Chessbase.com. It's certainly one of the better chess sites I've seen. Lotsa photos in the pic gallery.

Great site, including the following recent news item.

    http://www.thechessdrum.net/newsbrie...amaicaCh1.html

Note that it claims that the current Jamaican champion is FM Warren Elliott.

I've just found some time to really explore this site and I can see that there are some interesting content. For example, in the Essays section there's something about chess and hip-hop, lateral thinking, trash talking, etc.

When I was in San Francisco a couple of years ago (not exactly Africa), I saw a very unexpected sight in the mall, near the cable car terminus - a bunch of tough-looking black guys playing rap music on their stereos - and playing chess!!! I went over to have a look and it turned out they were hustlers, you could have a game against them for money.

Anyway, I decided to take on one guy who looked like Samuel L Jackson. First game we played for 5 bucks and he cleaned me up. Second game we played for double or nothing and I managed to beat him though I am not sure whether he threw the game. Third game, double or nothing, and he got me. I decided to make a move before I lost more than 20 dollars. Had a quick chat to him afterwards and he said he once came 5th is the US Championships. Anyway, that was a very memorable experience and pretty cool to see people defying the usual nerdy chess stereotype.
