    2005 MCC club championship

The 2005 Metro Club Championship has begun with 56 players split into 5 divisions. The 'A' and 'E' divisions contain 10 players each, the 'B', 'C', 'D' divisions have 12 players each.

The 'A' and 'B' divisions are both 60 mins plus 40 secs per move, the 'C', 'D', and 'E' divisions are all moves in 90 mins.

The top seeds in the 'A' division Peter Roza and David Ellis both lost their 1st round games to set the scene for an intriguing division.

The Metro Club Championships 'A', 'B', 'C' divisions have very nice rating splits:
    'A' 1977-1818 plus 2 ppl:
John Fedec (1771) very keen, fast improving winner of B Respini division, will be over 1800 in March, now on 2.5/4. Ganesh Viswaneth (1647) qualifies as previous B winner, at Aus juniors finished with 3.5/4 against highly rated players to finish =5th.
New club member Rob Maris is surprise leader on 4/4.

    'B' 1697-1571 plus 1:
12 year old Yita Choong (1501) previous C winner, he has started with 1 win & 3 draws. Incidentally, in round 1 well known organiser Bob Pilgrim (1571) beat top rated Ray Johnstone (1697). School teacher Robin Shaw leads this division.

'C' 1495-1300 with less than 10 rating points between the top 3 seeds. Well liked junior Ryan Humphries has taken the early lead in this division.

Info on D & E divisions will be given in updated posts.

In the 'A' division Rob Maris (1937!!) is currently a point clear on 4/4, but David Ellis (1961!!) and Peter Roza (1977!!) have dropped just 1 point.

The 'B' division of 12 players is very close with the clear leader Mohammad Jahangirian the only player on 3/4. After being hospitlised with a serious illness towards the end of 2004, it is great to see Mohammad back and playing so well

In the 'C' junior Ryan Humphries (1495!!) is on 4/4 a point clear of Tom Bell (1464). Unrated players lead the 'D' and 'E': Robert Leeson is on 3/3 in the 'D', Jon Prunty is on 3/3 in the 'E'.

The 'A' division is looking close (especially after Peter defeated me), but there are many games not yet played. Top scores (based on least points dropped): John Fedec 4.5/6, Rob Maris 5/7, Peter Roza 3/5, David Ellis 3/5 (or 2/4). Of the 10 players Dick Lilly (despite a fine Aus Ch) is not doing so well 0.5/6. Round 8 scheduled for March 31 has Rob v John, David v Peter.

Juniors Daniel Van Heerden and Yita Choong are undefeated leaders in the 'B' division, whilst Tom Bell leads the 'C'. I believe that Rob Leeson remains 1st in the D and Jon Prunty is in top spot in the E.

As it is a catch-up night this Thursday I will have plenty of time to get more scores from all divisions.

There are 4 players in the battle for 1st place in the 'A' division: John Fedec 5.5/7, Rob Maris 5/7, Peter Roza 4/6, David Ellis 3/5. John was the 10th (last) player to qualify for this division! Round 8 has Rob v John and David v Peter and Round 9 has David v John.

Of the 12 players in the 'B' division the two juniors Daniel van Heerden and Yita Choong are =1st on 5.5/7 (both unbeaten). In the 'C' 3 players are clear of the rest: Tom Bell 5/6, Kelvin Taylor 4.5/6, Ryan Humphries 5/7. In the 'D' Adam Keshwar 5.5/6 is followed by Robert Leeson 5.5/7 and in the 'E' Ben Motu 4/5 and junior George Wong 5.5/7 are top scorers.
