Magnificent news. The appointment of Chess Victoria’s Vice-President Dr Peter Tsai recognises his singular application to the training of younger arbiters in Australia, to join the ranks of Australia’s senior arbiter Shaun Press (who also represents Papua New Guinea).

The transformation of the process for choosing panel arbiters for international FIDE events by adoption of a methodical model instead of by the ad hoc and non-transparent methods of yesteryear happened during the watch of FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich and can be seen as one of those many micro-reforms that has remained hidden from sight of the average chess player. Despite revulsion at his country’s invasion of Ukraine, he remains the most competent of Presidents.
