What: 9-round (more if possible) Swiss draw competition (A/15)
Who: open to all junior players
Where: Fernvale State School
When: Sunday 15th of May (not Saturday)
Entry: $20 (paid in advance - no entries taken
on the day)
Prizes: Trophies 1st 2nd & 3rd and
Chess prizes for Top 3 rating improvers/
best performance ratings

Purpose: provide an opportunity for young

If my understanding is correct, 33 days notice is required? This would mean that the latest possible date for calling a 14th May election should be tomorrow (Monday 11th April).

Edit: So it is indeed 21st May. Evidently I missed that piece of news.

Greetings all!
A couple of weeks to go until our latest event and we absolutely delighted to announce that…

…our regular ‘friends of Fernvale Chess’, FM Dusan Stojic and WIM Alex Jule will be joining us again at some stage during the weekend to inspire, encourage and assist the children by going through their games with them. We are so fortunate to have such fine players and positive role models visiting us out in the country!

Enter below… please note that the day of the 1-day event (usually Saturday), has been changed to Sunday to assist players with Saturday sport commitments.
We look forward to seeing your child(ren) at Fernvale on the weekend of May 14/15.

CANCELLATION AND POSTPONEMENT NOTICE

We are extremely disappointed to announce that the (almost) Winter Weekend of Chess will NOT be going ahead tomorrow and Sunday due to the existing and future probable flooding in the region. Currently most of the secondary roads in and around Fernvale are cut and some of the major highways also, with a projected 200-400ml of rain due today in the Lockyer Valley. Much of the rain falling between the Range at Toowoomba and Brisbane flows through the Fernvale local area. Safety considerations must come first. Currently the venue (Fernvale SS) is being set up as a regional evacuation centre! (Again). Unbelievable…

We have rescheduled the Weekend of Chess to a fortnight away… Saturday 28th of May and Sunday 29th. Next weekend was not possible due to the elections at the school and also not wishing to clash with the Toowoomba event where many of the children will be playing.

We do thank you for your understanding… it is not a decision lightly made.
Could we please ask that if your child(ren) will be playing in a fortnight, to let me know through this page or privately… and of course, as usual, a FULL refund is available for those who can’t make it. Alternatively, I am happy to hold your entry as credit for the next event. Please let me know. Any queries regarding this announcement, please feel free to contact me.

Well, at least the two week postponement gives a chance for those children who couldn’t have played this weekend to play in a fortnight! ��

We are hoping to see some more awesome young Chess players from around SEQ come and challenge the ‘Fernvale Fab Four’ of Jason, Oliver, Sam and Jack in the Weekend event… and the One Day event is wide open with a QJ rating cap of 700 and over 20 keen players already entered.

The (almost) Winter Weekend of Chess at Fernvale was held this weekend at the safe, quiet, spacious venue of the Fernvale State School. We thank the school for their continued support of Chess and the use of their spaces.

In the Weekend event, top seed Jason L stumbled against a determined Oliver S and Oliver never let his guard down to defeat all-comers for a fine picket fence score of 7/7. The prizes were awarded as follows:
1st Trophy - Oliver S 7/7
2nd Trophy - Jason L 6/7
3rd Trophy (TB) Avaneesh P 4.5/7

Most Improved Medal + voucher for either free entry to next event OR free Chess lesson with Mr Butler - Abbie G (+15)
Most Improved voucher - Kayden L (+14)
Most Improved voucher - Hamsini D (+12)

A big congratulations to all those players… and all the other children who played every game with fine sporting spirit. (16 players)

The One-Day event, like the Weekender, saw the second seed Ruhan B dominate throughout the competition with a fine score of 10.5/11. Although he was somewhat fortunate to score two of his points, he demonstrated great application at the board and really, was a class above the field.
The prizes went to:

2nd Trophy - Mirabelle L (9/11TB)
3rd Trophy - Elisabelle L (9/11)

A great day of Chess… we promised 9 rounds, but there was time and the players voted to play more… so we managed to fit in 11! Some tired (but happy) little people at the end of the day! It was a very easy day to run as the children were so polite and kind to each other… some new friendships were made. (26 players)

We would like to thank our ‘friends of Fernvale’ WIM Alex Jule and FM Dusan Stojic who again gave generously of their time for the benefit of the children by going through their games and generally inspiring them to aim higher. How lucky are we?! Also, we thank Ted Carter and ASCEND Learning for their support to run the events.
