666 was an incorrect calculation/translation. Forget what the correct translation was, doesn't really matter.
Same as rabbits being cloven-hooved. Same as forgetting to include Cane's wife's name.
All written hundreds of years after the alleged events. And all taken from much much older religions.

The issue is the manuscript variations. The Greek and Hebrew letters had a numerical value. Some manuscripts have numerals χξϛ → 666, but a few others have χιϛ → 616. Most spell out the number in words ἑξακόσιοι ἑξήκοντα ἕξ.
