Alumni Teams lands in Australia! Sat. Aug 6-8, 2022

August 6th, Saturday until 8th August, Monday. Play Saturday only. 11am to 5pm.

Celebrating 50 years of State and National School Teams Championships.

Burleigh Heads – Beachside – Fradgley Hall Community Centre. Play Saturday 6th Aug. The rest is up to you!

THE BEST CHESS VENUE IN AUSTRALIA – forget the serenity, taste the sand!

What about the organizers of those great former teams?
What about the coaches of those great former teams?
What about the parents/guardians who drove you to all those venues in a galaxy, far, far away?
    Auw shucks, bring ‘em too!

Friday 5th August 2022 – You can hit the Coast late in the arvo. You left work early. You can be picked up by an embarrassingly long limo.
15 minutes and 15 klms straight up the highway to Burleigh Beach.
There appears to be another group at the other end of the limo – it’s hard to see from here – its ok – they’re chess players also.

Hit Hotel Reception, bags in the unit. Checkout the world class beach view from your balcony.
Drinks at the Beach Bar of Mowbray Park SLSC. When I tell you it is the best Beach Bar in Australia, there will be doubters.
When you are sitting there sipping your margaritas, you will understand what I mean.
Or coffees, or a meal at one of the 20 eateries ranging from take-away to a la carte all within the café precinct.
All a very short walk from your accommodation and playing venue.

    -----------------------------------

Saturday 6th August – A Big day of Chess between mates and former rivals, Australia wide.
You are playing for the “Alumni Kings” and “Alumni Queens” Trophy 2022.

Sunday 7th August – spend the morning running on the beach and drinking very good coffee.

Monday 8th August - spend the morning running on the beach and drinking very good coffee.

Or take a day trip up to Springbrook, a beautiful National Park. 33 klms, 40 minutes-drive away.
Or do some designer shopping in Burleigh or Surfers. Or stay for the week. You’re in charge.

    -------------------------------------------------

Sounds good, doesn’t it? We now have a date and venue.

Gold Coast Chess Club is inviting anyone who has ever battled over the chess board against former Qld Juniors to,
“Hit the Coast for the weekend”.
Did you play them in the Australian Juniors, Australian High School or Primary School Teams Championships?
Were you part of your team’s support team?

    --------------------------------------

Time to meet up with old friends and chess opponents alike.

    What happened to Freddie?
    Did Susie marry Snorky?

What about catching up with your mates who went on to create that software firm?
Any positions coming up? Forget the interview process – come up and talk to the boss in person.
You might have to throw a game or two, but it is a REALLY good job.

50% of Australian marriages end in divorce. Is your school yard sweetheart now single?
Come up and make your pitch, the second time around.
You’ve had your ears fixed – it’s now or never!

Got a partner and or kids now? They are not going to be stuck in a hotel room all weekend while you are off playing chess.
You play chess one day – then you play with the family/friends on some of the best beaches in the world for the rest of your stay.

We already have a very successful event if only SE Qld Teams compete, and then there is the rest of Queensland.

Come and play with some of the most successful people in Australia. And don’t forget the Chess!
Trying to find the 1972 Miami High Gold Coast High School Team who won the Qld.State High School Teams Championship 1972.

    R. Passfield, E. Sala, D. Macpherson and C. Rohde

Any news on these players would be appreciated. They would be in their late 60s now.

Have started to advertise this event on Facebook. Looking especially for the great match ups between leading schools.
Hoping that some of these people would like a weekend on the Coast with a bit of chess thrown in.

    Worongary v Essex Heights
    ACGS v Sydney Grammar
Somerville House v Presbyterian Ladies College
    Melbourne High v Brisbane Grammar.

and any others you can think of!

Some of these Championships were decided by tie-breaks! I remember Worongary Girls won one event that way.
Probably =1st or a 10- minute play off would have been better.

    Any info is appreciated.

Sounds like a good idea, Kerry.
So what's your excuse? For running like the devil's chasing you?

See you in another life, brotha.

Not sure about 1972 but over years, Melbourne High has been having more strong players than probably any other school in Australia!

Yeah, wish I could claim it as my own but High School reunions had to have been a billion dollar a year business in the US pre covid .
How many movies have they made about it?

Once these people get used to meeting up once a year offline, we can ask them to invest in the new crop of youth.
Peanuts to them, a fortune to Aus. Chess.
I've been surfing Lindekin, Facebook etc and some of these people are doing very well indeed.

And what is to stop someone from running an Alumni Teams Lightning event in Melbourne, or Perth.
No increment, because these people can attract media, who want the clock ticking, just like 60 Minutes.
With increment, they are going to be standing around looking at the floor wondering,

    "Does this EVER end"?

    Professional venue, good dining etc.

Where did Rupert go to school? I've got his number here somewhere.

I will Contact Melbourne High, but they probably don't keep tabs on Alumni as much as Private Schools, for obvious reasons.

This is the link for the Alumni Teams event Sat. 6th August 2022
    Burleigh Beach.

    Prediction -
In 5 years time, this will be our biggest annual event.

I've been looking at the economy behind reunions in USA pre-Covid. Wow!

This event is reestablishing the connection between the Year 12s we drop every year and the World-Beaters they become.

    See you on Burleigh Beach!
