There are a couple of humorous scenarios. This one, which I previously mentioned as potential issue for Ding. It is highly likely that he has taken the Chinese Covid Vaccine, but that Vaccine is not accepted in the EU. So, it he might struggle to get a visa to Spain.

Another possibility, after all this focus on players now worried about their ratings, how many games others have played, is that Karjakin's appeal is successful and he is allowed to take his place in the 2022 Candidates, and all of this becomes irrelevant.

Aronian has also dipped below Mamedyarov on the live list, so if a second replacement were required (Eg if Ding or one of the qualifiers didn't play), he might be out of luck.

Karjakin's appeal against being disqualified will be heard on May 5th-6th. Hopefully it will not be overturned.

Any news on whether Ding Liren is going to be able to get a visa so he can play in the candidates?

I hope he can but his failure to get a visa to the Grand Prix tournaments is concerning.

If it is overturned it will be a disgrace.

Aronian is behind both Mamedyarov and So on the May rating list so if a replacement is needed it will be Mamedyarov.

Ding replacing Karjakin is now official:

Ding Liren Officially In the Candidates As FIDE Announces Participants
    Updated: May 16, 2022

GM Ding Liren is officially among the participants of the FIDE Candidates Tournament. The field of eight players was announced today by the International Chess Federation. Ding replaces GM Sergey Karjakin, who was banned for six months due to expressing his strong support for Russia's warfare in Ukraine on social media.

Ding's participation, which is now official, was already pretty certain when Karjakin's appeal against his ban was dismissed. ...

    Field:
    • GM Ian Nepomniachtchi (runner-up 2021 world championship)
    • GM Teimour Radjabov (nominated by FIDE)
    • GM Jan-Krzysztof Duda (winner 2021 World Cup)
    • GM Alireza Firouzja (winner 2021 FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss)
    • GM Fabiano Caruana (runner-up 2021 FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss)
    • GM Hikaru Nakamura (winner FIDE Grand Prix)
    • GM Richard Rapport (runner-up FIDE Grand Prix)
    • GM Ding Liren (highest-rated player)

    ...
