    Apparently the Rapid has been 15 rounds in previous years but only 13 this year. 15 rounds would be hard to do in two days.

    Note the Womens Rapid was only 11 (4 4 3) rounds and the Blitz will be 17 (9 8) rounds.

    A couple of matters to note regarding the tie breaks.

    Not unsurprisingly, the tie break method used for the rapid and blitz is clearly listed in the regulations. Unfortunately, it is in pdf and I can not seem to be able to copy the text to here to show it.

    All the players had the opportunity to raise this issue before the event and get it changed. Magnus has never been shy about complaining about issues he does not like, so he could have raised this issue when he received the players contract and it was his responsibility to read the playing conditions.

    It is all there in black and white.

    This tie break method sucks, but complaining afterwards, when you have received the playing contract which contained the tie break criteria and said nothing before hand sound rather like crying over spilt milk.

    My thoughts on using Armageddon finishes are well known, and looking at the tie break, there is no Armageddon finish. Instead, two games of 3 +2 will be played, then if still tied, one game at 3 +2 will be played with the player with the best tie break playing white. If this game is drawn, then opposite colours for the second game.

    Then this procedure repeats again until one player wins one game.

    With the exception for how the player is decided for colour, this is the method I have advocated for deciding rapid and blitz tie breaks for 'years'.

    On day 1 of blitz Magnus appeared to be out of sorts. Strange losses to to Sochko and Fedoseev but nevertheless - 5th equal and will hopefully recover to fight for medals on day 2.

    Day 2 of the Blitz now delayed with the news that Hikaru Nakamura has tested positive to COVID - close contacts (ie all of his opponents from yesterday) will need to be tested.

    And people playing on board next to his...entering same venue, arbiters - are obviously not close contacts .

    MVL takes the Blitz title, after defeating Duda in a playoff, with Alireza also =1st (15/21) not involved in the playoff.
    Aronian, who was outright first after the first day, only managed =5th.
    Carlsen =8th 13.5/21
    Abdusattorov =41st 12/21.
    So what's your excuse? For running like the devil's chasing you?

    See you in another life, brotha.
