    RIP Bert Newton, AM, MBE (23 July 1938 – 30 October 2021)

Many different articles to choose from, of course.

Bert Newton has died age 83 after having his leg amputated earlier this year due to a life threatening infection.

Journalist Peter Ford told news.com.au that Patti Newton, Bert’s beloved wife of 46 years, asked him to confirm the sad news on his family’s behalf.

“I have very sad news,” Ford tweeted on Saturday evening.

“Showbiz icon Bert Newton has died at age 83. It was remarkable career on TV, stage & radio. Sadly he didn’t get the last chapter he deserved. He was a great mentor & friend to me. Condolences to Patti,Lauren,Matthew & extended family.”

The veteran performer — affectionately called Moonface — died while undergoing palliative care at a private clinic in Melbourne.

Newton was a Logie Hall of Fame inductee, quadruple Gold Logie-winning entertainer and a radio, theatre and television personality and presenter. He is survived by his wife Patti, children Lauren and Matthew and extended family.

Speaking to news.com.au, Peter Ford said: “He didn’t get the last chapter he deserved having spent the past year in hospital during Covid and losing his leg.”

Touching on his decades-spanning career, he said Newton’s “outrageous and unpredictable character” had earned him fans of all ages, calling him one of the “last of the brigade of the real TV stars.”

In the early 1990's he seemed to be on TV non-stop, so he became one of the first Australian icons I could recognize. R.I.P.
