Redcliffe Chess Club invites one and all to the 2021 LEO WILKINSON MEMORIAL on SATURDAY SEPT 25 and SUNDAY SEPT 26. 100 player maximum.

VENUE: F Block, V Block Grace Lutheran College, Buchanan Street, Rothwell.

ROUNDS: 6 round Swiss Sat 10am, Sat 1pm, Sat 4pm, Sun 9am, Sun 12 noon, Sun 3pm. Up to two half point byes available for rounds 1-5.

TIME CONTROL: 60 minutes each plus 20 seconds a move from move 1.

PRIZES: 1st: $1000 2nd: $500 3rd: $250 plus 5 rating groups! A:$200 B:$175 C:$150 D:$125 E:$100 plus Best Unrated ACF: $50

Regulations for the 2021 Leo Wilkinson Memorial Open

An 6-round Swiss tournament. ACF and QJ rated.

All games will be played according to the FIDE Laws of Chess.

Time control: 60 minutes + 20 seconds increment from move 1

Pairing System: Vega using Swiss Dutch FIDE JaVaFo
Tie Break: 1.Buchholz Cut 1; 2.Buchholz; 3.Direct Encounter.

Forfeiture time: 30 minutes from advertised start time.

Congratulations to Aiden Brady [1836 Fide] for defeating GM Daniel Fernandez [2487 Fide] in the upset of the tournament. Fernandez is usually comfortable winning these endgames with technique, but here Aiden holds his nerve and it's the GM who stumbles.

Re1! - but I assume that this would have been played in a time scramble. Although the idea of keeping a rook on the board if you're an exchange down is an important one.

My guess is that Daniel must've seen f4, but was calculating something like 23.Qb5+ Kf8 24.Qxb7 Rxe3 25.Qxa8+ Kg7 and saw that it's winning, but in such a line it's easy to overlook something. Then he saw that he can liquidate to a winning endgame with Rxe3, but blundered something along the way. Again speculating, but 22...Rxe3?? 23.Qxe3 Qxe3 24.Rxe3 Bg5 25.Rg3! looks like something one could miss. Sometimes having too many winning moves can be confusing because you want to find the "cleanest" solution.

Those are good points. Although 22 ... Qxe5 avoids the complications of 23.Qb5. And congratulations on your NVDG win - and beating Aiden!
