    Tokyo Olympics (23 July - 8 August 2021)

Those of us not allowed to leave home, or who in any case don't get out much, will be spending a bit of time watching sports that we would normally break records running away from. So as nobody else has started a topic I thought I'd go first.

I considered a poll on how many times the "expert" in one of the pretty sports would refuse to estimate a competitor's score and say "We'll just have to wait and see". But I decided it was better to stick with the obvious, seeing that we only have three years to tally the results before the next Olympics.

The poll relates to the published medal table as at the end of the Games, regardless of late changes from drug tests or other reasons, and excluding demonstration sports. A medal in a team or relay event counts as one medal. Where there are more than three medals, for instance for a dead heat or in a sport such as boxing or live pigeon shooting which doesn't use tie-breaks, each will count as a full medal. "None" includes the scenario of the Games being cancelled.

For the record, Australia won 29 medals (8-11-10) in 2016.

It seems the olympics will start but I am not so sure they will finish as planned.

Well, you can always go for the hero vote and select zero. Ian's terms were that if the Olympics were cancelled, medal count is zero.

About the only thing I know about Olympics medal tallies is that when a country hosts the Olympics its tally tends to boom and the boom then tends to persist to a reduced degree over a number of subsequent Games, gradually tailing away. For Aus at recent Olympics: 58 (host), 50, 46, 35, 29. On the other hand there's a circa 10% increase in medals this year if all events go ahead.

The Games have not yet begun (formally, though there are a couple of early starts) but the first drug tests are in, with a setback for the Australian horsing team:

This is the chap who was controversially selected in the first place, over much higher ranked riders and with conflict of interest accusations about his selection.

I do not know such national teams I only know team Australia and team NZ. I guess our maths and physics teams at World Maths competition should be singing Indian and Chinese Anthems and carry the flags.
