Bobby wins game 2 and through to play Aronian. Sanal was winning this one but trapped his own knight behind enemy lines. Oops.

    29. Nxg7 Kxg7 30. Rxd5 Nb6 31. Rd3 Nxa4 (c4 32. Rd2 Nxa4 33. Nd4) 32. b3 Nb6 33. g4 looks like a decent alternative

what if 29. Nxg7 Rxf3 do I give up the exchange for two pieces? Not sure if your Rooks can cause and damage to my position after this?

I have not a chess engine running to get a clue!

White's problem is that he spent two moves (Rd1-c1-c3) getting his rook to the third rank when one (29.Rd3) would have been fine. After 29.Rd3, Kf7 does not win because 30.g4 Rxf3 31.Ng5+! and if black recaptures there will come e6+ and exd7. But in the game line the black knight has left d7 so this line no longer exists. If 29.Rd3 Nb6 then 30.Rb3 is now possible, and 30...Rc3 does not work because of 31.Ned4 winning the exchange. All very complex for a rapid game.

    Cheng vs Aronian tomorrow!
A massive well done to Bobby. Congrats for beating Sanal and best of luck for your match with Aronian. On ya Bobby.

Curious, is this the first time an Aussie (zone3.6) has progressed past the first round?

Gary Lane progressed to the second round by walkover in 2005.

I've put a list of Australian results up at http://www.chesschat.org/showthread....and-precursors

Not only is Bobby the first Australian to win a match in these things, he is the first to even win a game over the board. But until this year's format change it was much harder as the first round tended to see Australians paired against very strong opponents.

I was sceptical about this format change when it was announced, but having now seen it in action, I think it is a very good change. Perhaps it could be improved slightly further by giving the top 64 players a bye through to the second round and having players 65 to 256 playing in the first round.

In the first round there were 6 upsets from 78 matches. None went to Armageddon though one went to the final blitz match.

In the women's there were 3 upsets from 39 matches and one match also went to the final blitz match but not Armageddon.

FIDE has just announced on Facebook that Aronian will forfeit game 1 of round 2.
GM Levon Aronian will forfeit the first game of the second round at the FIDE World Cup. The Armenian Grandmaster has had some symptoms of fever earlier this week. Even though Aronian feels well now, in order to not risk the safety of other players it has been decided that he will withdraw from the first game, and he will undergo additional health tests before deciding if he is fit to play in the second game.

Rated #5 in the world, Aronian was seeded directly into the second round of the tournament, which kicked off in Sochi (Russia) on July 12th.

I noticed in the live stream that a few players are wearing masks, but by far most are not.

Something weird going on with Caruana - Megaranto which is showing as a win for white on move 16 for no obvious reason. Report on Twitter of Caruana seen in the press room.

The same account, a newly started account attributed to Theo Wait (Lichess) has said that Megaranto has tested positive to COVID and has been defaulted, so Caruana will have to isolate and be tested himself. [EDIT: default confirmed by FIDE]

Why are the players not all wearing masks?

Surely a number of the players are now close contacts and should isolate while the rest a casual contacts and need to be tested. At least that would be the Australian standard if something like this happened.

Rather unfortunate. Sounds like he had a covid test prior to the game and it came back positive. Will the game be rated?

I reckon more masks will be worn tomorrow.
