    FIDE World Cup 2021

I couldn't find a relevant thread for this topic, so I started one here.

As announced yesterday - May, 31 2021 - by ECU (European Chess Union)

In February, and under the conditions of strict lockdowns in Europe, the ECU Board had to make a difficult decision on how to distribute the European qualifying places. the decision had been made for the European Hybrid Qualifier. But in such unpredictable circumstances we had to find an assurance that so 10 places were decided for the highest placed players who had no other personal right. This was a special decision for a special year.

Qualifiers by rating. See attached image

Details of the Hybrid European qualifiers here

    https://www.europechess.org/36-playe...rld-chess-cup/

Any sort of criticism under the present covid-19 related circumstances in Europe is rather inappropriate. However, having almost 40% of the 46 European qualifiers representing one country (Russia) might raise a few eyebrows!
Well, it might not be as bad as the USSR dominated zonal system in the old times, but considering that the FIDE World Cup 2021 will be held in Russia, makes the whole situation sound a tad unfair, that's my opinion anyway!

If its going to be non Hybrid (and how can you select WCC candidates via Hybrid) - how will the Australian representative participate anyway?

The 2021 World Cup is OTB in Sochi, Russia, not hybrid. See the World cup website - https://worldcup.fide.com/

Then its fair to say that Timur's participation is unlikely. Going out of Australia in July...

The participants list also includes Allen Fan nominated by NZ -rated 2193. My guess is: he is overseas-based already so easier for him to make it to Sochi

The 4 June, 23:59 Lausanne time is the confirmation deadline for the Women's World Cup and 6 June, 23:59 Lausanne time for the world Cup.

The 9 June, 23:59 Lausanne time is the nomination and confirmation deadline for both for all players nominated by their respective federations.

Allen lives in NZ (he's still a junior).

Right, so with 2193 getting nominated, I trust that the 2200+ NZ players did not apply but he is prepared to undertake all the travelling adventures.

Essentially, particularly with the likely difficulties getting the time off work for travel + quarantine.

    World Cup pairings are out.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qmR...pX2PKmzxR/view

With the expanded field Bobby Cheng has just drawn in the top half for the first round (which is not comparable to the first round in previous WCs) and is seeded 126, playing 131 seeded GM Vahap Sanal (India). Sanal is in his early 20s and their ratings are almost identical.

The winner plays Levon Aronian in the second round, which is equivalent to the old first round.

(NB I don't know for sure that Bobby is playing given the issues with COVID travel at the moment, I am just noting that that is what happens if he is.)

Temur Kuybokarov isn't playing and is replaced by ... Elmer Prudente (rating 1998) of Guam!

    Poll added

Poll rules - you can vote for up to 3 players. If anyone votes for more than 3 then only the highest listed in the poll will count.

The poll winner(s) are the voters whose player(s) finish the highest (countback is finishing position of second player voted for, then third player voted for.)

A vote for Other only counts if the other player is named on the thread before the poll closes. The poll closes 14-07-2021 at 06:16 PM AEST.

Because of COVID, if a voter has voted for a player and that player withdraws before the poll closes or the player has played any games then that voter may cast a replacement vote by posting on the thread before the poll closes.

Can only do one poll per thread! The Women's World Cup runs at the same time but ends four days earlier. Feel free to start a thread on it and put a poll up if you like. If no one else starts a thread I will eventually; I am unsure of the interest level for a poll so will only put a poll up myself if I think there is enough interest.

Twelve of the top 20 playing (if I counted right).

Missing: Ding Liren, Nepo, Anand, Wang Hao, So, Rapport, Nakamura and Topalov.
