[*] Searching in FIDE's rating records the earliest Greg's rating I could find was 2000-Jan 2280 when the FM was 30 yo
Two years after the above game (1990) Greg represented Australia in the Novi Sad Olympiad with a FIDE rating of 2215

OlimpBase has older FIDE rating lists; Canfell's first rating was 2245 in January 1989.

Excellent, thanks for the info as well as the important link which, however, provides Canfell's rating record from 1989 onwards.
Before I proceed to correcting let me mention that the game in discussion was played in 1988.
Apologies for neglecting or deleting by mistake that important detail in the original post.

GM David Smerdon one of Australia's best ever players, studied, worked and played chess in Europe for a number of years.
There, Assistant Professor D. Smerdon, also a widely acclaimed author was given the opportunity to participate in many strong tournaments where he faced highly rated opposition. His well known drawn game vs the WC Magnus Carlsen is a characteristic example. Either playing in individual and team tournaments or representing the green and gold as a member of the Australian Olympic squad GM Smerdon has produced quite a few OTB gems some of which I will publish here in future posts. The game above vs Naiditsch, Arkadij a well known GM of the international scene, is a typical example of GM Smerdon's fighting and creative spirit!

I was unimpressed with GM Bartel's effort in this game. Maybe the complexities are way beyond me.
Zionism is racism as defined by the UN, Israel by every dirty means available steals land and water, kill Palestinian freedom fighters and civilians, and operates an apartheid system to drive more Palestinians off their land

As stated above, GM David Smerdon has authored chess books such as

Which I already have purchased as well as
Smerdon David The Fighting Chess Index an introduction of which by Dr Kevin Bonham can be found in another thread of this forum.
Also in the following link which contains some interesting and valid comments acknowledged and discussed by the author as well as some inevitable utterly rubbish trolling treated by GM Smerdon with the contempt it deserves.

(*) I am not sure what does FSGM stand for. (Is it IFM's Flexible System of Global Models sponsoring the above chess tournament?
I do not wish to tread into non chess related territory, but I will ask Ari when I see him next time!
    Hi ER
It stands for First Sunday Grand Master. Its a Hungarian norm tournament popular with (young) aspiring Aussie masters, because of frequency and other factors. Its like having the December Australasian Masters run by L Sandler every month- a very tired Lenoid. Max i think got at least one norm from this tournament, from memory.

Doeberl, Olympiads and Australian championships are goldmines for this thread.

Although he didn't win Anton's draws with Karjakin (2730+) top 10 player are imho pretty impressive
IM james Morris I'm sure beat GM Hrant Melkymyan in doeberl one year.
FM puccini beat a titled Philipino player at Bangkok Open. also a minaiture
MCC veteran Colin Savige beat Swapnil Dhopade....at the same tournament.

I'll let ER post the games as his presentation is excellent.

I would love to take up your offer but unfortunately was an undocumented park game, against I was told, number 4 in Holland with $100 on it.

    Congratulations on excellent thread.
