Before I proceed to correcting let me mention that the game in discussion was played in 1988.

GM David Smerdon one of Australia's best ever players, studied, worked and played chess in Europe for a number of years.
There, Assistant Professor D. Smerdon, also a widely acclaimed author was given the opportunity to participate in many strong tournaments where he faced highly rated opposition. His well known drawn game vs the WC Magnus Carlsen is a characteristic example. Either playing in individual and team tournaments or representing the green and gold as a member of the Australian Olympic squad GM Smerdon has produced quite a few OTB gems some of which I will publish here in future posts. The game above vs Naiditsch, Arkadij a well known GM of the international scene, is a typical example of GM Smerdon's fighting and creative spirit!

It stands for First Sunday Grand Master. Its a Hungarian norm tournament popular with (young) aspiring Aussie masters, because of frequency and other factors. Its like having the December Australasian Masters run by L Sandler every month- a very tired Lenoid. Max i think got at least one norm from this tournament, from memory.

Doeberl, Olympiads and Australian championships are goldmines for this thread.

Although he didn't win Anton's draws with Karjakin (2730+) top 10 player are imho pretty impressive
IM james Morris I'm sure beat GM Hrant Melkymyan in doeberl one year.
FM puccini beat a titled Philipino player at Bangkok Open. also a minaiture
MCC veteran Colin Savige beat Swapnil Dhopade....at the same tournament.
