    Hi organisers,
I would really love to play, but want to make sure there will be no requirement for mask-wearing at this event.
No doubt there are many people who don't find masks a distraction. Personally I find chess is hard enough already and to know the policy beforehand would be great - it would definitely make the difference between playing or not.

Yes, C you have a point there, however, taking under consideration the efficiency of the organisers, I am sure that their initial official announcement which includes the following paragraph

Should Covid restrictions change and the number of entries be capped, then we will take entries in the order of receipt of payment in full with completed registration.
will eventually be readjusted to specify hygienic conditions of play!

I imagine that one of the deciding factors will be the rules/regulations that the Vic government will put in place in March...and this is still hard to predict.

    Thanks Michael.

To the organisers and others: What are the rules/regulations that would be in place if the tournament was played today?

I am concerned that some Victorian club organisers for 2021 are interpreting the Government wording 'strong recommendation' as 'mandatory'.

A very slippery slope here - perhaps future OTB tournaments will require a 'proof of vaccine' certificate - you know, "Show me your papers."

This page would indicate that masks are currently mandatory in indoor spaces that are not residences. The main exceptions are for specific health reasons, being under 12 yo or when eating or drinking.

Just a reminder on this one.

Currently two GMs (Johansen & Zhao) and two IMs (Morris & Dale) have entered.

    Current entries here: https://www.ballaratchess.com/begonia/2021/results.html

As for the wearing of masks, that will be based upon the state government's COVID restrictions at the time.

Some other notable entries as well. Jeremy O'Carroll appears to be making a return to competitive chess after a 25 years long break from the game!

Please note that the canteen will not be open during the event so bring your own water bottle. There are many cafes nearby for food and coffee. Please also bring a mask and be prepared to login daily on the Services Victoria app or website. Re masks: we will follow the official rules about wearing masks at this size event and conform to any restrictions that are required. Please refer to https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/f...wear-face-mask We will not collect and hold mobile phones so be prepared to turn your phone off and put it in a bag under your table.
See you soon! PS 129 people are on the player list already!

I usually leave my phone where I am staying or in the car. Can I suggest you print out a sign in sheet with everyone's name so we just initial and put the time of arrival. 140 players with phones is sure to cause forfeits.

Because I have accidently lost games by mobile phone twice, and could have a few other times by forgetting I had it on me.

A big plus: According to the tournament's website, GM Ian Rogers will provide Live Commentary again as it proved so popular in previous years.
