In 2015, the Australian federal government proclaimed that violence against women had become a national crisis. Despite widespread social and economic advances in the status of women since the 1970s, including growing awareness and action around gender violence, its prevalence remains alarming.

Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows that a third of all women in Australia have been assaulted physically and a fifth of all women have been assaulted sexually. In 2016, nearly a fifth of adult women also reported they had been sexually harassed in the past 12 months.

Other statistics show that one woman is murdered by an intimate partner in Australia each week, and family violence is a leading factor in a third of all cases of homelessness.

The resulting strain on government services and lost productivity is estimated to cost the Australian economy around A$13.6 billion a year.

Gender violence seems to have reached a particularly significant moment in Australia. But violence against women is often represented as a timeless and universal phenomenon. This creates the perception that the problem is too large to fix, or that only the worst abuses are worthy of attention.

Police arrest 14 in major drug sting


Just before sunrise yesterday morning, police officers began arresting the first of 14 people across Sydney following an investigation into the supply of cocaine and MDMA.

Investigators executed 12 search warrants in Bondi Beach, North Bondi, Maroubra, Chippendale, Randwick, the Sydney CBD, Alexandria, Darlington, Earlwood, Balgowlah and Pennant Hills.

Officers seized 500 grams of cocaine, three kilograms of MDMA, 400g of ketamine, cannabis and magic mushrooms. They also seized a pistol, a loaded shotgun and more than $660,000 in cash.

Police will allege the 14 people knew each other and predominantly operated throughout the eastern suburbs and Sydney’s CBD.

In December last year, officers established strike force Caladenia to investigate the supply of prohibited drugs across Sydney and have so far charged five people with drugrelated offences.

During yesterday’s operation, 14 people were arrested and taken to four separate police stations. Charges are expected to be laid.

NSW Police Redfern region enforcement squad commander Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Bell said the operation would have a significant effect on drug supply in the eastern suburbs.

‘‘They will all be processed ... and there are further warrants that will be conducted and further investigations do continue,’’ he said. ‘‘If you are involved in drugs, the police will be investigating you and hopefully bring you before the courts.’’

If the woman was on all that ice, grog and ganja it is a wonder that it didn't show up other ways and action taken. Can she "blame" the ice?

Economic Divirsity and Crime - Old Theories and New Evidence. 22-10-2016.

The article examins the continuing relevance of economic adversity and social policy in the understanding and prevention of crime.
There's a juxtaposition in traditional theories highlighting a cause and effect relation as opposed to new findings regarding factors that led to disputing of those theories.
It is a very thorough summary of basic points of both approaches in direct and indirect criminogenic effects on economic adversity.
Fields analysed include long-term impact on parenting, impact of economic adversity on crime within a community, recent empirical studies using econometric techniques, wages, employment, housing, welfare and income support programs.
