Most likely MVL stays in, you can't really conditionally withdraw. Unless they say the circumstances are so unusual that they make it nine players.

Full Melbourne Chess Club statement: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&p...MmRjOTQ2MmJiYQ

"Additionally, the Australian Government has advised that all non-essential mass gatherings be banned as of the 16th March 2020."

I think that's overstating things considerably. The official advice is:

To help slow the spread, the Australian Government has advised, effective from Monday 16 March, organised, non-essential gatherings should be limited to 500 people.

    [..]

Non-essential meetings or conferences of critical workforces, such as health care professionals and emergency services, should also be limited.

    Source https://www.health.gov.au/news/healt...v-health-alert

    Nonetheless a very understandable decision.

All clubs should be actively considering there own circumstances and whether they want to risk being a site for transmission of the virus between chess players. In some cases it might not be time to close yet but it at least should be being considered.

Curiously, as far as I understand - Doebrl and SIO are still going ahead.

Which at the moment is reasonable as there has only been a very low level of known unexplained community transmission in NSW, and ACT has only had one case. But this can change very quickly.

Is the ACF considering doing anything about COVID 19?

Nothing being actively considered at the moment at Council level, or at any other level I'm aware of. There may be decisions to be made down the track about running or not running ASTC, Aus Juniors, Aus Open, but these are still a fair way off.

I think that the MCC closure is premature, although understandable. I can imagine the Brisbane Chess Club closing, but only as part of broader action being taken in the general community.

I have been wondering about interschool events, however. I don't think any in Qld would have 500 people at them, but some of them will definitely attract several hundred people. Although schoolchildren are the lowest risk group, so there probably isn't any urgent issue.

The Mercury has published this definition of "close contact" which may be useful:

"A close contact is defined as someone who spends at least 15 minutes in close face-to-face contact with a positive case or is with them in an enclosed room for more than two hours."

Would be really good if ACF would come up with some kind of statement about the virus.
Also, I noted that some events (e.g. Doebrl) include international players - some of the players are listed on the rating list from countries that are currently closing their borders (e.g. India)...
So on the one hand, clubs may be cancelling small scale local events (e.g. MCC) on the other hand... large international events are going ahead. From a risk management perspective, i see it as a bit odd.

I trust it will also apply to the Doebrl participants...
