Our players have not been noticeably affected at all (in terms of the standrad of their play) by having to wera maskes - at least as far as I can tell. On the other hand, the quality of this arbiter's play has been abysmal when he has attempted the arbiter / player deadly combination. So this year I will focus on the arbiting.

    Density restrictions return to Vicotria
    By Serena Seyfort12:13
Mr Foley said a density limit of one person per two square metres was coming into place for indoor entertainment and hospitality venues in Victoria.

Indoor seated cinemas and theatres, where people are seated and masked, will be exempt from the limit.

"We think this is a sensible change, particularly in the face of the continued huge growth in transmission, particularly amongst young people," Mr Foley said.

"Yesterday's formal figures, 40 per cent of those cases where people in their 20s and every indication is it's overwhelmingly from hospitality and related environments."

Mr Foley said authorities were also strongly recommending businesses and their patrons avoid indoor dancefloors and opt for seated service.

Victorians are also being advised to work and study from home where possible.

Chess club is not an entertainment venue right? So chess can continue as before. Am I correct in my assumption?

Presumably chess players, being seated and masked, are exempt.

We have had to deal with regulations like this previously up here in Qld ie masked whilst seated ok. The question arises, what happens when the players are walking around, or have finished their games and are now spectators? And what happens with parents, or spectators in general?

I think rather than referring to what seems to be a vaguely worded news announcement, you need to find the exact wording from Vic Health, like we have had to from Qld Health on these matters.

Quite often, what is said in a press conference by a politician and then what the official wording is can be rather different when all the carve outs and exceptions are added to the official State Health Website.

I looked earlier today on the Vic Health website and I struggled to find the official wording on this matter. I can find the current regulations on the Qld Health website, but I am used to following those regulations and how to find them.

I have a conceret question: In Melbourne - one must wear a mask while playing. So If someone turns up to the club without a mask and is requested to put one on but says he has a health exemption but refuses to show any document supporting the exemption - what shall the club do:
    a) allow him to play anyway
    b) not allow him to play?
    c) allow him to play but request some kind of document in writing confirming that he has one?

If a player cannot provide proof they have an exemption they do not play.

If he is a GM put him outside on his own table with moves announced from 6 feet away. His/her opponent 6 feet away as well. Sanitize his pencil and pieces after use.

If a player has been asked to provide evidence of a health exemption and has said that they are not willing to provide evidence then that player should be required to leave the venue immediately. Ditto for a player who claims to have proof of exemption but has forgotten to bring it with them. If they change their mind and come back with proof of exemption that's another matter and depends on whether the club is willing to accept medical exemptions. Some clubs have announced a policy that they will not accept exemptions.

This is one of the easier questions you will get on this topic. As masks are compulsory unless the person has a medical exemption, your only option is:

Ask the person to show their proof in writing of the medical exemption. If they fail to provide that proof, and it must be from a doctor and it will be on an official form, Vic Health for you, then you must not let them play.

If your club allows that person to play without a mask and no legal medical exemption, and either someone else gets Covid at your club, or someone from Vic Health turns up to your club during the session the person is there, your club will then be liable for the prescribed fines that have been laid out by the State Government, which are usually in the thousands of dollars.

As a chess club, it is not worth it just to let one person play.

Of course not worth it for one person. Novak was no. 1. So if unjabbed Carlsen came to MCC our only move is zangzhuang!

Put him on outdoor simul for fund raising.
