A great site for learning and playing. You can play an online opponent at any time of the day or night.

''When you can not sleep'' hours are actually best for getting strong opposition given our time differences with other corners of the planet!

I too play my best chess when I'm not asleep. But also my worst.
So what's your excuse? To run like the devil's chasing you.

Does anyone else play the computer on the chess.com app? Just wondering what people think of the ratings that the computer is given at different levels. Even given a couple of hundred points for internet inflation, seems like they're pretty high. I had a few cracks at it on level 17 (2600) and got this pretty easy win (I had black).

From what I've noticed with the computer, even on lower levels it can play pretty strong moves 95% of the time, then just play totally dumb moves, like just not recapturing a piece swap. I'd rather a more realistic emulation, where it say follows a weak plan and you slowly outplay it, rather than just winning on the spot from a really unnatural move.

Not bad for 1700 . Re computer playing 2600...it lost due to blunder rather than being outplayed...so got to be a weak program. 12. Ne2 for instance and white is totally fine

And when you play online, sometimes you get to play against other auzzies anyway:

For playing online games is chess.com generally thought of as being good/the best? Given that chess will be wholly online for the foreseeable future I suppose I should make the leap - hoping to avoid ending up on dodgy/useless sites so any thoughts welcomed!

lichess.com is probably the other site to look at for playing; it is imho well-designed and all free (with no ads) and has plenty of strong players floating around with nice tournaments
chess.com would be the strongest though, even if the interface is slightly more clunky and you may have to deal with ads. As a bonus the ping is much better to Australia than lichess

yeah I agree re lichess, actually now with the online tournaments having increased dramatically, it caters well for all needs.
I was once member of chess.com years ago and have forgotten the services they offer, actually the programs they offer with lessons, videos etc
are quite cheap so I was thinking of re-joining, that's why I asked Michael who's an expert which level is the best.
    Thanks anyway Mr. Pawn
