    Bundaberg Chess

Having successfully staged two weekenders last year; we hope to repeat the feat this year. Further details of upcoming competitions will be posted here on Chess Chat, as well as on the CAQ website, in the coming months along with other chess events in our district.

One player came from Gladstone for the first time because of the information e-mailed to school chess coordinators; as well as 4 players from Hervey Bay/Maryborough.
    Thr results were
1st Sarah Knight 6/6, picket fence
2nd Joel Knight 5/6, lost on time to his sister Sarah.
3 way tie for 3rd 4/6 Lucas Bern, Jaden Holzheimer, Ewan Kenway.

Gardiner Chess came to town for the Wide Bay North Term 1. This event was held at Walkervale State School on Wednesday 11/3/20 attracting 111 contestants, 49 in the High School section and 62 in the Primary; this was a new record for a first term tournament. Schools in the district fielded teams of four students. After seven intense rounds, top placings in the team awards were –
    High Schools Division
    First Shalom College 21.5
    Second Bundaberg SHS 20
Third St Luke’s Anglican College 16.5
    Primary Schools Division
First St Luke’s Anglican College 22
    Second Norville SS 1 19.5
    Third Norville SS 2 19
There were some fine individual performances. Bundaberg SHS student Joshua Howard turned in a remarkable effort. He won all seven of his games. In the primary schools section, placings were determined by computer after three players each finished with six wins. Top placings in the individual awards were –
    High Schools Section
First Joshua Howard Bundaberg SHS 7
    Second Patrick Maher Shalom 6
    Third Nicholas Whitelum Shalom 6
    Primary Schools Section
    First Scott Rosenberger Norville 6
    Second Ewan Kenway Norville 6
Third Joshua Lee St Luke’s 6
The next of these tournaments, The Wide Bay North Term Two, will be held at Avoca State School on Tuesday 19/5/20.
Our thanks to Shaun and Sam

Unfortunately along with the rest of Queensland we have suspended club activities for the foreseeable future. We may even have to learn to "nop" instead of shaking hands before a game.

Will this mean offering your elbow as a gesture of resignation?

Surely the winner should be giving his/her opponent the elbow. Kowtowing should be sufficient from the resignee.

As the year progresses and more and more tournaments have to be cancelled I suspect that our Open in August will bite the dust as well. Hopefully our second tournament, which is scheduled for 21/22 November may yet survive.

Last night we were officially back. Armed with Glen 20, Dettol wipes and hand sanitiser we reconquered the club rooms. New and old faces met across the boards and a good time was had by all.

I am interested in how you maintained the social distancing of 1.5m while you "met across boards". It may be relevant to other chess clubs who want to resume operations.

What we have done is separated the tables so that the non-moving player can pull back after stopping their clock. Thus a 2m distance can be maintained. We have sufficient area >80sqm, so that we can seat up to 20 players. I hope this is helpful to all other clubs out there. Also of benefit is the CAQ document that originated in Toowoomba for a club COVID-19 plan

We are going to hold our club championship as a weekender over the 28th and 29th August. Numbers will be limited by the prevailing COVID restriction, but there may be a spare spot if you are passing. It will be ACF rated with time controls of 60+20

Well competitive chess is back in Bundy. Gardiner Chess staged Round 3 of the Wide Bay North division and the full results can be found on their website.
Our club championship is set to go ahead on the 28th and 29th August. Elbow off will be at 0930. So can you be there by 0900 so that entries can be made into Swiss Manager. Adults $20 a head and juniors $10. Prizes will be determined by the number of entrants. It will be ACF rated if you are a CAQ member

Our club weekender is now underway. We have a couple of visitors Mark Stokes and Tony Weller. We think this is the first OTB tournament in the post COVID era.
So; Board 1 Tony Weller v Phil Mulholland; Board 2, Martin Carter v Mark Stokes; Board 3, John Harris v Steven Harris; Board 4, Ranga Mashamhandra v Peter Bender; Board 5, Louis Willemse v Adam Richardt. Keith Macleod having the bye.
    Updates will follow.
