Selective border closures don't work - as we saw in 2020. As the variant has now been detected in Europe and the UK (and China), it's probably time for Australia to close international borders completely - at least until it's clear how serious the new variant is.

I agree. While there are so many unknowns and this new variant could even be a good thing (highly infectious but far less deadly) caution should come first so that if ends up being significantly worse and vaccines are less effective then we have kept it out.

It's interesting that Biden has applied selective border closure to African countries, while he denounced Trump for doing the same.

This new variant with 32 mutations should alphabetically be named the Xi variant, but WHO are puppets of the genocidal Communist Chinese regime—their tweet helping the CCP downplay the virus' high infectivity probably cost millions of lives.

Some good news: the variant seems to be mild, and has not yet been shown that it can evade vaccine-induced immunity:

“The new Omicron variant of the Coronavirus results in MILD disease, WITHOUT prominent symptoms.” -Angelique Coetzee, the chairwoman of the South African Medical Association.

"It presents mild disease with symptoms being sore muscles and tiredness for a day or two not feeling well. So far, we have detected that those infected do not suffer loss of taste or smell. They might have a slight cough. There are no prominent symptoms. Of those infected some are currently being treated at home.” Hospitals have NOT been overburdened by Omicron patients and the new strain has not been detected in vaccinated individuals there. We know those vaccinated from other countries infected have been mild or asymptomatic.

After all, T-cells have about 100 targets to attack on the so-called spike protein, and there is a limit to how many copying errors it can stand before it will no longer be able to infect cells. Memory B-cells are designed to adapt to the attacking variant.

Both Pfizer and Moderna claim that they could fairly quickly make RNA vaccines that can target variants. As expected, this “new era of vaccine technology” can do this much quicker than with traditional vaccines that needed to culture the whole pathogen.

This doesn't make scientific sense though. Vaccines do NOT create variants. Mutations aka copying mistakes do. So it stands to reason that the more copying, the more chance for mutations. So they are more likely to arise in unvaccinated people, whose adaptive immune systems are not trained to destroy the virus before it has a chance to copy much. Not surprisingly, variants arose before mass vaccination in the countries involved. Delta arose in India 3 months before the country's vaccination program. The Omicron variant arose in a poorly vaccinated area.

At best, vaccines might select variants, which arose from previous copying, for vaccine evasion. But the evidence that ‘leaky’ vaccines provide selection pressure in the real world for vaccine-evasive pathogens is slight to non-existent. It hasn't happened with the vaccines routinely given to kids, and the usual example involves a chicken vaccine against Marek's disease, although the vaccine is still a life-saver and the evidence for selection pressure is equivocal. See this critique of Geert Vanden Bossche, a Belgian veterinarian who has made similar claims, and dismisses the virus that has killed over 5M people as “harmless”.

Also, none of the variants are good at evading adaptive immune systems of fully vaccinated individuals. A few months ago, One paper Effectiveness of Covid-19 Vaccines against the B.1.617.2 (Delta) Variant (NEJM 21 Jul 2021) said:

Effectiveness after one dose of vaccine (BNT162b2 [Pfizer/BioNTech mRNA vaccine] or ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 [Oxford–AstraZeneca]) was notably lower among persons with the delta variant (30.7%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 25.2 to 35.7) than among those with the alpha variant (48.7%; 95% CI, 45.5 to 51.7); the results were similar for both vaccines. With the BNT162b2 vaccine, the effectiveness of two doses was 93.7% (95% CI, 91.6 to 95.3) among persons with the alpha variant and 88.0% (95% CI, 85.3 to 90.1) among those with the delta variant. With the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine, the effectiveness of two doses was 74.5% (95% CI, 68.4 to 79.4) among persons with the alpha variant and 67.0% (95% CI, 61.3 to 71.8) among those with the delta variant.

Similarly, there is no evidence yet that Omicron can evade vaccine-induced immunity.

I agree completely. That's why we want as many people as possible vaccinated. By the way, the variant before Omicron was Mu, so the next variant should have been called "Nu", not "Xi" or "Omicron".
