A new virus identified in mid-December that’s quite similar to SARS, 500+ confirmed to be infected (although one source estimated it to be a lot more) and 17 deaths already. Apparently Wuhan has shut down the airport, train stations and blocked off highways. The residents are stockpiling food so they don’t need to go outside and risk catching the virus later. I’d recommend to read updates of the disease on a daily basis, wash your hands well, maybe wear a mask just in case

I think ancient Greeks thought that cities should be no greater than 10,000 people. It would certainly make emergencies easier to deal with.

This is a common problem - one paper finds something sensational and then the claim is all over social media before other scientists who disagree with it can be heard.

How ironic because the Japanese during the War tested such chemicals on the Chinese in areas they had taken over. I think I visited one such place in Harbin. Cold ruddy place that is. I stayed at the ex-German embassy from before the war, beautiful old building still had the snooker tables in it.

Yesterday, I had a chat with a friend of mine who is currently in China. She has family in Wuhan. She said her family was lucky to get out of Wuhan before the lockdown and spend the NY together in Shanghai. The 2 biggest concerns for majority of the people are the virus and the lock-down. One problem with the lock-down is that while it is certainly effective in not allowing the virus to spread even more, NY is the time that many travel to be with the family so some people have been caught in places where they do not want to be.

You should try to stay neutral no matter how painful. A virus would not surprise me due to a Chinese friend's eating habits. He is a Hakka. They would have a dining table with a hole in the centre in which a live monkey"s skull would protrude with the monkey tied up underneath of course. With a hammer they would smash the skull then eat the raw brain. And earlier you were complaining about native people's customs in another thread. I could arrange a dinner date with him too if you like.
