    1) This week the Rooty Hill RSL CC will have the same schedule in chess.com as last week. Tomorrow night there will be a 7 round 10 minutes tournament beginning at 6.30 (register after 5.30) and on Wednesday a 5 minutes + 3 seconds increment Arena tournament (continuous games unless you pull out for a round or 2) with the same starting arrangements. All welcome in both tournaments. No entry fees. We encourage more members and friends to join the Arena tournament, where we are currently averaging 13-14 players. We generally get over 20 on the Monday nights.

    2) Full results for last week's 2 tournaments are available through our club on chess.com. For Monday night see https://www.chess.com/tournament/liv...rounds-1238416. The winner this time was our Assistant Webmaster, Winston Zhao Chen.

The results for Wednesday night's Arena tournament on chess.com are available at https://www.chess.com/tournament/liv...rena-53-206971. Next event next Monday night! All welcome!

    3) We are aware that we have been running the same tournaments time controls for several weeks. Therefore, Winston Zhao Chen has developed a survey so that we know our players' time control preferences for online chess. The link is https://forms.gle/K6ZogAfuFW8QMWYT7

It would be great if players could respond to the short survey before next weekend, so that if there are changes in the schedule we have time to arrange them.

The survey applies to both Monday nights and Wednesday nights. If there is a strong vote for change we will change our time controls accordingly.

Note that we are not offering anything longer than 20 minutes each for the whole game for 2 reasons:
    a) the night would go too late for juniors; and

    b) The longer time controls are more open to cheating (such as looking up chess books or chess programs while playing). Several clubs have found this issue with longer time controls online. We wish to avoid it.

See you online! Don't forget to register well before 6.30 pm to be there for Round 1 on both Monday and Wednesday.

    Statement regarding over-the- board play

Rooty Hill RSL Chess Club will not be resuming over-the-board play in the near future, despite the loosening of restrictions in NSW which come into effect on 1 June. The NSW Government has not approved any clubs within the club recommencing play by its members. These include table tennis, chess, snooker and indoor bowls.

Other factors have also been considered to reach this conclusion: ,

    1) A general desire to exercise caution and to assess the consequences of the loosening of restrictions, and, in particular, the effect, if any, that this will have on the amount of COVID-19 cases in NSW, before any decision is made to resume in-person meetings.
    2) The safety and wellbeing of our club members and their families are our greatest priority.

We will inform our players as soon as a decision is made to resume over-the-board play. However, at this stage, we are unable to provide an estimated timeframe.

We understand that this may be disappointing and we want you to be involved with the club. In the meantime, we encourage you to participate in the weekly Monday & Wednesday evening tournaments currently being run on Chess.com https://www.chess.com/live commencing every week at 6.30pm. Entries open at 5:30pm.

    Peter Cassettari,
    Rooty Hill RSL CC President
