I never really understood the point of having teams in an event such as this, given that players perform individually and do not work together towards a common goal. Whenever I played in this event I was allocated to a team randomly, which did not add anything meaningful to my tournament experience.

I'm sorry to hear that you did not enjoy the added team aspect of this event. We often hear from many players that the added team aspect of the event makes it more enjoyable. For many players who team up with friends it gives them a reason to be interested in results other tham their own. For some juniors they get the opportunity to be in a team with strong titled players in order to bring down the stronger players average, juniors then have reason to interact with said strong player which often means a lot. Aside from any of these things if it doesn't interest an individual it is still additional prizes that could be won for the same entry fee.

Well said Shaun. The tournament has been successful for over 20 years and stayed true to the concept of encouraging friendships and bonds across age groups and playing strength.

With the teams aspect of the event, it's also possible (and definitely encouraged!) for players to form their own teams....our staff will team players as best we can, but we can't guarantee everyone a realistic shot at the team title.

What a great field! By the way, I really love the extra added free bonus of a Team Prize! Tony Weller and I love trying to get a Team of 4 with a total ACF Rating of 5600 ( 1400 x 4 ) or just below! We hope to get David Lovejoy and an upcoming Junior around 925 ACF to make up Team Weller! We sometimes make friends with a new Team Member that we did not even know before the Chess Tournament this way! Looking forward to a great weekend of Chess and more at The Hinterland Hotel Nerang this Saturday September 21 and this Sunday September 22! I think a bye may be needed by me and by Tony for the 6pm round 4 game on Saturday night though - we are not as young as we once were!

An impressive list. What a great tourney—a fitting memorial to Nell v.d. Graaff.
“The history of the 20th century is full of examples of countries that set out to redistribute wealth and ended up redistributing poverty.”
“There’s no point blaming the tragedies of socialism on the flaws or corruption of particular leaders. Any system which allows some people to exercise unbridled power over others is an open invitation to abuse, whether that system is called slavery or socialism or something else.”—Thomas Sowell
