    Gold Coast Open 2019

The Gold Coast Open is Queensland's most prestigious chess tournament and is considered to be a top 3 International Open in the Australian Chess Calendar.

2019 Gold Coast Open will follow the format of 2018 in hopes to attract another strong field. In 2018 Temur Kuybokarov received his 3rd GM norm at this event and we would love to see more top players achieve norms from the event.

Attached is the tournament flyer, for more information please contact Gardiner Chess: info@gardinerchess.com.au or www.gardinerchess.com.au

A highlight event alright. Let's hope it attracts some of the Australian GMs who skipped the Sydney International for some reason. Their lack of support was a bit disappointing.

We have also set up a new website dedicated to the tournament at https://goldcoastopenchess.com.au/. We have added payment options on this site, included the previous winners of the event (according to the perpetual shield) and have added information about our sponsors, accommodation and the venue being utilised.

If anyone finds any issues with the website, please don't hesitate to let me know. I will endeavour to add some photos in the coming days.

Many thanks to David Esmonde and his AuNix team for assisting with the creation of the website.

In light of the recent controversy over mobile phones I had a look at the rules section on your tournament website and it says:

" Mobile phones and other communication devices must be turned off within the playing hall. There will be a collection point at the arbiterís table for such devices."

This is a little ambiguous. Does it mean handing over your phone at the arbiter's table will be compulsory? If so, will secure storage be arranged?

Sirkka has contacted Gardiner Chess and was informed that he is ineligible to play the major division this year. He has been offered a refund or the opportunity to play the premier division.
