Just got a FB message from a chess friend who may be interested in playing in the Challenger who wants to know how ''weak'' does one need to be rating-wise to be accepted into that Challenger event. His Fide is 1900 or so I think and no ACF

You (and your friend) are welcome Michael.
I have to tell you though that after my initial enthusiasm, I discovered that SIO
clashes with our very own ANZAC Day (*) w/e at MCC. So I am actually in two minds now.
    We'll see how it goes.
(*) whose penultimate and final rounds also clash with Chess Artists Excellence tournament R1 at Caulfield!

Whatever the case might be SIO is a great tournament and along with Doeberl and Aus Champs and/or Aus Open Champs
will contribute to international exposure and local improvement of our game!

I wish Paul, Shaun and co. all the best!

Well done on getting the SIO up and running again, Paul and Shaun. I have special memories of this event, as it's the tournament where I qualified for my FIDE Master title, back in 2010. The first SIO, back in 2007, was a massive breakthrough tournament for me, where I went from being a talented 2000-rated player to scoring more than the occasional win against players rated around 2150-2250. I hope your hard work is rewarded with a strong, large field and a very successful tournament.

Thanks everyone for your enthusiasm regarding this event! We have definitely been getting a lot of interest from overseas titled players, so it looks promising for a successful revival. It's unfortunate regarding the clash with the MCC Weekender though.

Hi all, I've got some very exciting news. Registrations are now live for this tournament through TryBooking. We've also launched our new website (credit to our webmaster and Chief Arbiter Alana Chibnall) - http://siochess.com/. Please find the link for registration here - http://siochess.com/registration/. We've already received one entry from GM Daniel Fernandez from the UK! If you all could spread the word and share the new website that would be great. Lets get this tournament rolling.

Yes of course! If you could share as widely as possible that would be great. The old website also now redirects to the current one - www.siochess.com
