IM norm, but GM norm isn't available as he hasn't played an average rating of 2380 (GM norms weren't available as that wasn't possible with the field).

Yes, another blanket finish is possible! Yesterday I underestimated Dive's changes as I had imagined him struggling on the Black side of an Advance Caro Kann rather than almost winning with his trusty Petroff. Smith had a favourable draw so made up ground as I had suspected he might. Leonard McLaren has come from nowhere but in another possible scenario one good game against fellow senior Leonid Sandler could see him clinch the title. Personally I'd love to see veteran Paul Garbett get another title (maybe his swan song) as he has played some very determined chess over the last three weeks.

Plus an IM norm for Brandon is essentially irrelevant as he is already an IM-elect.

McLaren had an obvious one move win against Johansen at one point of the game.

Yes, 18.Bxd8 (a rook for a bishop). I had assumed the scoresheet was wrong but it must have been mutual chess blindness.

    NZ Champion

Familiar names will be engraved on the world's oldest chess championship trophy, the Silver Rook. Anthony Ker, for the 14th time, and defending 2018 NZ champion Russell Dive for the 6th time. Despite a massive blunder on move 30. Qh5 (-9.56) which was overlooked by GM Papin, Ker hung in there, equalised after 34 moves and secured the draw after 40 moves. Dive drew with GM Johansen in 24 moves, perhaps taking advantage of the fact that he had a better position (1.31) at the point. Congratulations ! In third place with 5.5 points are Paul Garbett and Daniel Gong who drew their game, and Bob Smith, who had GM Gareyev as his opponent in round 9. Brandon Clarke (Eng) drew with Alex Wohl to win the tourmament together with GM Timur Gareyev (USA) on 7 points.

Not for the first time, congrats to Anthony and Russell! Both were active in Wellington 20 plus years ago when I played there.
And of course huge congratulations to Brandon and Timur.

Ker - Papin. It is not immediately obvious that 31...Rxf2! is completely winning but it is.

Yes, good wins to both of these multiple former champs. And congrats to Clarke for his back-to-back victories in this and the George Trundle Masters.

    NZ Rapid

Day 1 of the NZ Rapid is over and after 5 rounds, there are two GMs with picket fences, GM Vasily Papin (RUS) and GM Timur Gareyev (USA). There are five kiwis in second place on 4 points: Ralph Hart, Johnson Li, Paul Garbett, Russell Dive and Bob Smith. Half a point behind are Anthony Ker and David Notley. Highlights from the first 5 rounds: Hart's round 3 win vs Alex Wohl and Johnson Li's wins over Brandon Clarke and Anthony Ker in rounds 3 and 4.
