    Ballarat Begonia Open 2019 March 9 - 11

The Ballarat Begonia Open is a favourite amongst Australia's chess players. Most of Australia's GMs, many IMs and FMs and possibly OS GMs have expressed interest in competing, as well as our regular cohort of supporters. GM Ian Rogers will provide Live Commentary again as it proved so popular in previous years. Peter Tsai will be our chief arbiter and we will be utilising the great facilities at Clarendon College.

NEW: An Under 1200 ACF Rating, 5 round tournament will run concurrently over Sunday 10th and Monday 11th only, with time controls of 60 minutes plus 30 seconds increment. There are many players, and parents of players, who will find this shorter tournament more player and family friendly while still providing the experience of a well organised, highly competitive ACF rated event, with prizes to be won. Entry fees will be half price, at $60, and only $50 for early-bird entries before the 22nd of February. Tournament numbers will be capped at 40 participants as it will be held in what was the Analysis Room (which will now be located nearby).
Schedule will be 5 Rounds: Sunday 10:00 am, 1:30 pm, 5:00 pm, and Monday 10:00 am and 1:30 pm.
    Prizes for the U1200 will be 1st - $200, 2nd - $150 and 3rd - $100

Go to www.begoniaopen.com to register for a spot in both the Open and the U1200.

Is the tournament FIDE rated? This says it is http://ballaratchess.com/begonia/commonfiles/rules.html but saying it's "ACF rated" implies it's not FIDE rated (otherwise, I'd expect it to say "ACF and FIDE rated").

It does say "rated by both the ACF and FIDE"

    To all chess players
It is now only a few days to go until the 53rd Begonia Open chess tournament gets underway. We have already received commitments to play from over 110 players including many of the top players in Australia. We have also received entries for over 50 players in the new under 1200 tournament.
Many players receiving this message will have already entered so we look forward to catching up with you next Saturday. If you have not entered the event as yet then it is still not too late to do so. That can be done by visiting the tournament website at www.begoniaopen.com where you can enter and even pay your entry fee. There is also a full list of entries received to date, information on accommodation and further details about the event for this year as well as a history of the tournament.
With Grandmasters Zong-Yuan Zhao, Moulthun Ly, Darryl Johansen, Daniel Fernandez (UK) and GM elect Bobby Cheng competing along with International Masters Junta Ikeda, Stephen Solomon, Leonid Sandler and IM elect Brandon Clarke, there is sure to be some hot competition for the outright prizes. The ratings group prizes on offer are some of the best anywhere in Australia, so they will also be keenly contested. Grandmaster Ian Rogers will also be attending to provide expert analysis on the top games as they unfold each round. A new under 1200 event has attracted a lot of interest from lower rated and new players to tournament chess. That event will be held over 2 days in the adjoining building.
If any players would like to take a half-point bye in the first 5 rounds then they will need to let the Chief Arbiter Peter Tsai or me know in advance. For those unable to play they will be able to keep up to date at the tournament website at www.begoniaopen.com where results and the pairings for each round will be displayed as soon as they are available. A relay of the some of the top games will be available from a link available at the website as well.
All members of the committee are looking forward to catching up with players at the weekend. Let me know if you have any questions about the event.
    Kind Regards

In Ballarat at the moment - it was great to see all the people helping to set up the tournament venue.

121 entries in the main tournament at the moment, but there could be a few more on the day.

    http://www.ballaratchess.com/begonia/2019/index.html

Another 60 entries in the Under 1200 tournament (Sunday / Monday only).

Best of luck to everyone competing!

We're starting in a few hours---I'm quite excited to play!! I haven't played in Australia for a while. Looks like it'll be an exciting and enjoyable tournament! (And hopefully I don't blunder too often! *giggles*)
