All in all, its a good move as more players will get a chance to become part of the ''big scene'' as well as make a little bit of money.

Yes, some similarity. Another comparison is with tennis, where top seeds go straight into the main draw in major events and the lower tier play qualifiers among themselves. Though in tennis some players get wild cards to bypass the qualifiers - let us hope that FIDE doesn't emulate that.

    FIDE Qualification Commission Coronavirus Response

This concerns how FIDE is dealing with ratings issues for tournaments halted prematurely, cancelled, moved etc because of COVID-19.

Copied from FIDE's official webpage ...

    About International Chess Day

FIDE has been celebrating the International Chess Day since 1966, following a recommendation of UNESCO.
The date marks the establishment of the International Chess Federation, which was founded during the Paris 1924 Summer Olympics.

On December 12, 2019, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution proclaiming 20 July as "World Chess Day", as per their own denomination.
The resolution was tabled by Armenia and co-sponsored by 52 other countries. Armenia’s Ambassador to the UN, Mher Margaryan,
presented chess as a consensus builder that “can transcend national boundaries and break down racial, political and social barriers."

    Call for submissions:
    FIDE veterans support program

The International Chess Federation is pleased to announce the continuation of its support to chess veterans.

As it was previously published, an amount of €35,000 has already been distributed in April 2020 among 17 illustrious chess veterans.

Now, a dedicated panel assigned by the FIDE Council to this task will consider applications to distribute an additional relief fund of €15,000, increasing the total to a record €50,000. We understand these are challenging times, especially for our seniors, and we will do our utmost to try and provide support to those who are in need.

Eligible to receive these stipends are any distinguished players, trainers, authors, and promoters of chess aged 65+, who have contributed to the development of chess and who are in an unstable financial situation.

We invite federations, clubs, and players themselves to send their applications, including a CV of the nominee, to the FIDE Secretariat: office@fide.com. The deadline for submissions is August 10, 2020.
