Temur Kuybokarov is new number 3 player in Australia!

International Master Timur Kuybokarov just completed his transfer from Uzbekistan to Australia!

With the current FIDE rating of 2513 , 18-years old Western Australian resident Temur is welcome addition to our country.

He got 3 Grandmaster Norms and will be awarded a GM title soon.

Welcome to the Australian chess family Temur!

Yes, good job! Australia has just landed the 9th grandmaster. The 5th player in Australia is rated 2508.

So it is highly likely that in the next Olympiad we will finally see all gm team representing Australia.

    Welcome Temur!

    Welcome Temur!
Glad to see the highest titled players number and average ELO increase!
That's combined with the age average of our top players drop!
I really hope that future achievement of producing our own GMs here in Australia is not an impossible dream!

Are we missing something here along the lines?

key phrase: Producing our own GMs here in Australia.

Meaning: earning GM norms and titles in Australia rather than having to travel overseas!

Place of birth: irrelevant! - planet Earth is the limit! (well for the time being)!

I wonder what percentage of GMs achieve all their norms in their home country. Maybe "home produced GMs" are a rarity.

What is Temur's current status - has an application been made yet for the award of the title? Where did he obtain his succesive norms? A youthful conqueror bearing the formidable name of Tamerlane.Tamerlan.jpg

The ACF applied for the GM title on behalf of Temur a few days ago.

Temur achieved his GM Norms in the following events( Australian Open in Brisbane 2017, Aeroflot Open 2017,Gold Coast Open 2018,Abu Dabi 2018).

Yes I sent it on Nov 11. Assuming it is approved he will be a GM following the first quarter 2019 PB meeting. Hopefully FIDE will actually hold the first quarter meeting in the first quarter!

I would have liked to apply faster but it took a long time for the transfer to be complete.

Do we have lift -off? Accelerating into a new order of GMs annually instead of decades.

    1985 Ian Rogers

    1995 Darryl Johansen

    2008 Zong-Yuan Zhao

    2009 David Smerdon

    2015 Max Illingworth

    2016 Moulthun Ly

    2017 Anton Smirnov

    2018 Justin Tan

    2019 Temur Kuybokarov

Hopefully two next year with Bobby Cheng only one norm away.

It could be a fair wait for the next one after that.

You're right. Cf. Greece (with a population under 12 million) has 14 GMs while Australia will have 9 GMs by the 1st Policy Board Meeting of FIDE next year. Greece mentioned only because I looked it up.

My recollection is that back when Greece had no titled players, but their government was keen on promoting chess, they asked Campo if he could organise for one of their players to become a GM. Campo responded to the effect that it would be a bit of a stretch, as they didnít even have an IM, but perhaps he could get them an IM instead. Nice to see how far they have progressed from those times.
    Still searching for Bobby Fischer....
