I am intending to try and defend my title - but you never know whether a young whippersnapper or two with a rating of 2300+ might enter!

A good field of 15 Veterans are contesting the 2018 Championship at Bracken Ridge this week-end. At the half way mark, top seed and defending champion Tony Dowden was only player to win all 3 games, defeating Don Hamilton, Mark C Stokes and Michael Cashman. However, with Tony taking a half point bye on Sunday morning, Allan Fossey will now have the opportunity to catch Tony on 3.5/4 if he wins his round 4 game against Redcliffe clubmate Tony Weller. The standings after 3 rounds are: 1st Tony Dowden 3/3, 2nd Allan Fossey 2.5/3, =3rd Michael Cashman, Rex Scarf, Mark C Stokes, Tony Weller and Peter Cronin, all on 2/3, 8th Chris Flynn 1.5/3, =9th John Paliwoda, Jim Ritchie, Don Hamilton, David Esmonde and Martin Carter, all on 1/3, 14th Keith Macleod 0.5/3 and 15th Adrian Scholtes on 0/3.

Here is the PROVISIONAL R4 draw on Sunday morning at 9:30am: B1 Allan Fossey v Tony Weller, B2 Michael Cashman v Rex Scarf, B3 Mark C Stokes v Peter Cronin, B4 Chris Flynn v Jim Ritchie, B5 Don Hamilton v David Esmonde, B6 John Paliwoda v Martin Carter, B7 Adrian Scholtes v Keith Macleod and Tony Dowden has a half point bye.

In the same way last year's Veterans' Chess Championship was decided, Tony Dowden on 4.5/5 faced Allan Fossey on 4/5 in the board one final round encounter, and just like last year, Tony Dowden won and thus successfully defended his title! Tony deserves hearty congratulations as he in fact won all 5 games he played - his half point was a Sunday morning half point bye! Allan Fossey finished in second once again but had to share the second place and third place prizemoney with Tony Weller and Peter Cronin - all of these players scored a creditable 4/6! It was a fun tournament to play in and everyone present said they thoroughly enjoyed the event and one and all said they would definitely be back again next year. Tony Dowden was presented with a brand new Veterans Champion Perpetual trophy at the prizegiving and Tyson Walker was on hand to capture the moment on camera so keep an eye out for the photo in the next CAQ Newsletter!
Here are the final scores of all 15 players: 1st Tony Dowden 5.5/6 =2nd Allan Fossey, Tony Weller and Peter Cronin all on 4/6, =5th Michael Cashman and Jim Ritchie, both on 3.5/6, =7th Mark C Stokes, John Paliwoda, Keith Macleod and David Esmonde - all on 3/6, =11th Rex Scarf, Don Hamilton and Chris Flynn -all on 2.5/6, 14th Martin Carter on 1/6 and 15th Adrian Scholtes on 0/6.
Now for the fun Teams of 6 Chess Day next Saturday, November 17, at The Hinterland Hotel Nerang from 9:15am - get full entry details of this event NOW off the CAQ Website under Coming Events: www.caq.org.au
