    Vikings Weekender 2018 - Canberra

    Vikings Weekender 2018

Final Canberra ACF Grand Prix event for 2018.

    17-18 November 2018

Further details, including round times, etc, can be found via the web page:

    http://vesus.org/festivals/2018-vikings-weekender/

This page has a link to a flyer that contains key information and contact details.

This year the venue will be the Lanyon Vikings Club, not the Erindale Club. The new venue offers lots of space and excellent catering facilities.

Also it is possible to register via the above web site and early registration is encouraged, though not necessary.

There are two tournaments, one an open and the other restricted to players rated under 1600 with the Australian Chess Federation.

Generous prizes are on offer, including Open 1st prize of $1000 and U1600 1st prize of $500.

As before there is a special prize of $100 for the best performing female in the U1600 tournament.

I have been informed that the special prize for the best performing female in the U1600 tournament will again be $150 (not $100) this year. Thanks to sponsor Jim Flood.

This tournament is fast approaching - just two weeks next Saturday.

The current list of registered players indicates a strong Open tournament. Four early entrants are rated over ACF 2000, including Grand Master Anton Smirnov and English player FIDE Master Brandon Clarke, both registered NSW players. Newly NSW-registered Romanian player Christian Borsa has a FIDE rating in excess of 2000. Strong local players include International Master Junta Ikeda, Fred Litchfield, Albert Winkelman and Womens FIDE Master Alana Chibnall.

Two weeks today before Canberra's 'Biggest Little Weekender'.

Please note the change of venue for this year's event.

    Lanyon Vikings
    Heildelberg St, Condor ACT
    (Next to Lanyon Shopping Centre)

So, not the Erindale address this year.

This venue offers excellent facilities. It is spacious and comfortable, with a range of club food and beverage outlets.

There is a nearby shopping centre with fast food restaurants, cafes, etc.

Less than one week before this event.

Pre-registration is not necessary though would help organisers. See above for details.

Already there are five titled players (including GM Anton Smirnov) registered, with the total number of participants in the event expected to be somewhere in the vicinity of the usual fifty to sixty.

The club opens at 10am and everyone is encouraged to come as early as possible to get play under way with a minimum of delay.
