Prizegiving will be held as soon as possible after the last round finishes. Entries close at 7:20pm on the day for the Lightning, and rounds will be paired as soon as possible after the previous round finishes.

There is a guaranteed minimum prize fund of $400 made up of cash and book prizes for the Rapid and $100 for the Lightning. These will be increased if entries allow.

South Island Rapid and Lighting Championship Competition Rules

    • Defaults: The default time for the Rapid is 30 minutes after the start of the round, per NZCF Regulations.
    • Appeals: A player may appeal against a decision of the Arbiter. An Appeals Committee will be elected at the Players Meeting. Appeals must be lodged in writing within 10 minutes of the end of the game (please indicate this as soon as possible so pairings can be delayed). A fee of $100 will apply, to be refunded if the appeal is successful or otherwise at the discretion of the Appeals Committee.
    • Mobile Phones: During a game, players are forbidden to have a mobile phone, electronic means of communication or any device capable of suggesting chess moves on their person in the playing venue - please note that this includes smart watches, but does not include digital watches with LCDs. Such devices may be stored in a player's bag or jacket, which is to be left under their table or over the back of their chair during the game unless permission is given by the Arbiter. Such devices are to be switched off and are not to make any noise. Breaches of this rule will result in loss of game unless the Arbiter decides otherwise.

    To Enter
The entry fee is $50 for the Rapid ($40 for juniors, tertiary students and unwaged players) or $120 to enter the South Island Championship and Rapid Championship ($100 for juniors, tertiary students and unwaged players). The entry fee is $30 ($20 for juniors, tertiary students and unwaged players - $20 entry fee also applies to players who have entered at least one of the Rapid or Championship).
