Justin is currently in Serbia chasing his final GM norm/2500 rating and after 4 rounds he is on a picket fence score 4/4~!

Justin on 5.5/6 with a 2700+ performance, needs to get 2 GM opponents in the final two rounds or will be very unlucky and miss the norm.

Just had another look at the list of participants - Ikeda and Winkelman are also playing in that Serbian event and doing credibly.

Justin needs 2 GM's and none that are under the FIDE Flag as it will not be considered as a foreign player/federation.

    lost

The issue about FIDE-flag players not counting as foreign is well spotted (he's playing one already and could well play another) but I don't see that it matters.

He has so far played players from ISL, BIH, IND, SRB(3) and his round 7 opponent is FID. Even suppose both his remaining opponents are FID, he has still played players from four actual federations, and it has not been the case that more than 2/3 of his opponents are from any one federation.

It doesn't matter what federations the GMs he plays are from - the federation calculations are based on all opponents, not GMs.

    Current regulations are here: http://www.fide.com/component/handbo...8&view=article

Very good result for Justin with another win, and the WFM and FM trailing him both lost to GM's so very likely he'll get two GM's in the final two rounds.

Also is the FIDE flag a new thing, or is it common in Serbia? I've never seen it in my life in any open and there are plenty in this tournament.

Thanks Kevin - that's a great relief to know, especially as Georgiev is also federated FIDE.

Hopefully, Justin can get his extra 0.5 points in R8 to get the required 7/9. If he manages to get 7/8, the R9 pairing is going to be tricky for a GM pairing. Unless Atalik or Lorparizangeneh win, the field will be wide open for Justin to play anyone on 6 as I understand it.

With the very unfortunate business of his "3rd GM norm" certificate being void, he could do with a bit of luck with the pairing!

By the way, he has also now crossed 2500 (live 2502).

The FIDE flag players (at least the leading ones) are Bulgarians. Bulgarian Chess Federation is under sanction and so they can only play as FIDE flag players. See https://www.fide.com/component/conte...-trainers.html

I have also checked that Justin needs .5/2 to get the GM norm, provided that he plays a GM in the final round (and the GM has to turn up!) I get the same thing.

Should be noted that Junta is also performing quite well (above his rating)
