Russia back from the nearly-dead to reach a match-points tie for 1st. Waiting to see how the tiebreaks pan out.

Looks like Ukraine is going to jump China and win the Women's.

Australia is beating Philippines so we will move up the standings but won't beat our starting ranking there.

Was great to see both Auzzie teams (Open & Women) giving their all in the last round! The Open team performed above their rating...and therefore well!

Aus women seeded 33 finished an okay 44th.

Great performance by Jilin undefeated with 7/9 in her first Olympiad for us. Her TPR (always ignore chess-results performance ratings) was 2332.

Open team seeded 41 finished a good 35th, marginally outperforming rating:

    Code:
    1	GM	Smirnov Anton	2549	AUS 0	1	0 1	1	5,0	9	2585	5	4,58	0,42	10	4,2
    2	GM	Zhao Zong-Yuan	2523	AUS	1 0	1	1 1	5,5	8	2604	5,5	4,65	0,85	10	8,5
    3	GM	Illingworth Max	2512	AUS	1 0 1 0 1	5,0	9	2414	5	6,05	-1,05	10	-10,5

this result is a reflection of Filipino society. Previously you could buy chess sets and books everywhere but not now, all the oldies knew how to play but now not the youngsters for them it is computer games. They obviously miss Wesley of course.

This didn't happen because of this unlikely save which won China the Women's Olympiad.

Ian Rogers has written in the 50 moves: "After a poor start, Smirnov and Illingworth bounced back to score respectably..."

Just some official statistics from the official website (performance rating and rating change after each name):

    1 GM Smirnov Anton 2585 4,2
    2 GM Zhao Zong-Yuan 2604 8,5
    3 GM Illingworth Max 2414 -10,5
    4 IM Cheng Bobby 2502 2,7
    5 IM Morris James 2467 0,0

Maybe a bit more statistics... What was board 1 performance in the previous 2 Olympiads?

In 2016 GM Smerdon David had performance of 2505 and lost 3,6 rating points.

In 2014 GM Smerdon David had performnce of 2464 and lost 5 rating points.

The performance ratings on Chess Results are wrong (too low) for any player who had to play against a low rated opponent. (That is why the medals are also awarded wrongly.) Generally this affects the performance ratings of the lower boards more.
The rating changes are usually correct.

Ian, just checked the true performances for Anton and Max using the pax calculator. Max has a performance rating of 2415, while Anton has a performance rating of 2583. So it is 1-2 points difference from the reported results.

    Vlad,
Those performance ratings for Bobby and James look too significantly low, as do most of the women's performance ratings.
In any case, it is very disingenuous to try to make a point at Max's expense by quoting only half a sentence, when the other half is clearly praising Anton anyway.

    Ian,
I think it is disingenuous to try to present Max in a better way at Anton's expense. One had bad performance, the other did not. There was no need to mention anybody.

Vlad, In an Olympiad report, it is probably better to mention everybody! Again, you quoted half a sentence to create an entirely misleading impression of my Open team summary. Why?
