    2018 Newcastle Open - incorporating the 2018 NSW country title (10th & 11th Feb)

    Hi All,

The Newcastle Open is on again this weekend for 2018 and this edition will also incorporate the 2018 NSW country title. Once again it will be a 6 round swiss tournament with three rounds on Saturday the 10th and three rounds on Sunday the 11th. The time control is an hour plus 10 seconds Fischer.

This is one of the more prestigious tournaments that Newcastle has to offer, made even more so with the inclusion of the NSW Country title. This will be awarded to the country player who finishes the highest on the leader board at the end of the competition. To qualify as a 'NSW Country Player', the person must reside in NSW & outside of the Sydney Metropolitan area at the time of the competition beginning.

All are welcome to play and we hope to have a strong turnout. I will put a list of players who have confirmed that they are playing up soon. We have at least 6 titled players at the moment. If you are interested in playing, you can let us know here or contact our president Brett Saunders by sending him an email (besaunders79@gmail.com).

    Details: -

Venue: Gallipoli Legion Club, 3-5 Beaumont St, Hamilton, NSW 2303 (1 minute walking distance from Hamilton Train Station)
Rate of Play: Fischer - 60 minutes + 10 sec per move for each player

    Dates: Saturday, 10th February & Sunday, 11th February, 2018

Registration: Saturday 10th from 9:30 am

    Rounds: Saturday: 10:30am, 1:30pm, 4:00pm & Sunday: 10:30am, 1:30pm, 4:00pm

    Prize Money:
    Major 1st, 2nd, 3rd overall
$150 to NSW Country Champion plus trophy
Divisional number of prizes subject to entry fees collected
Prize for game with best sacrifice - as judged by IM Gary Lane

Entry fees: Adults $60, Concession $50

NB - All NSW players are required to be either full or associate members of the NSW Chess Association (or members of NSW Junior Chess League if under 18).

Membership can be arranged on the day.

Players who have not appeared 30 minutes from the posted start time will have their game deemed lost.

Hope to see you all there.

You may want to add Vaness Reid to your titled player list as she is a WFM.

I hear that the first, third and fourth names above were first equal but would like to see some results here to confirm that. It was a strong field.

Thanks Trent for putting results up. I actually just got them last night myself. It was a wonderful tournament. 48 players including 7 titled players (Gary Lane, Richard Jones, Brandon Clarke, Jillin Zhang, Paul Russell, Vaness Reid and Nancy Lane) was a great effort.

The result was a three way tie between Gary Lane, Brandon Clarke and Jilin Zhang. Very strong tournament and a lot of tough chess played. In fact I cannot remember the last time there was a three way tie for first? Congratulations to these three players.

Karel Hursky claimed the 2018 country title, fighting off strong challenges from Paul Russell, Peter Bradshaw and previous winners Trent Parker, Fritz Vander Wal and Matthew Clarke. Karel takes over from Matthew Clarke who won it in Gosford last year.

It was also played in wonderful spirit and no real disputes to speak of. Thanks to Greg and Ron for once again doing an amazing job once again in organising the tournament as well as our President Brett Saunders. Full list of prize recipients below: -

Overall winners: - Brandon Clarke, Jilin Zhang and Gary Lane (5/6)

NSW Country Title: - Karel Hursky

Under 1800 division (Equal 1st): - Perti Sirkka, Geert Geesink, Trent Parker and Anshika Jain (4/6)

    Under 1500 division (Outright 1st): - Matthew Duncan (3.5/6)

Under 1500 division (Equal 2nd): - Norm Greenwood, Steven Kucera, Milorad Lukic and Dave Groenhout (3/6)

    Under 1300 division (Outright 1st): - Peter Bradshaw (4/6)

Under 1300 division (Equal 2nd): - Bela Nemeth, Michael Tracey and Michael Cvetanovksi (2/6)
