Entry to MCC Blitz Championship open to all players

Just a notice to anyone who is not a current MCC member that you are welcome to play in the MCC Blitz Championship.

I've had a few queries about whether non-members can play. The answer is YES, but non-members will pay a different entry fee and are not eligible for the title of MCC Blitz Champion.

Michael Baron is 2018 MCC Blitz Champion - beats Ari Dale in Armageddon playoff

A strong field of 26 players came to the the 2018 MCC Blitz Championship. Many of the best MCC allegro players were in attendance with some also enjoying the free pizzas and drinks that were catered before.

After 13 rounds, both FM Michael Baron and IM Ari Dale were on equal first with the impressive score of 11.5 points. Third was James Morris with 10.5 points, whose chances of winning suffering fatal blows in rounds 10 and 11 with a losses to Hans Gao and Majid Heydari.

As a result of their equal standing Michael and Ari played an Armageddon playoff game. Michael had white which meant he had 5 minutes for the game, while Ari had 4 minutes as black. As black, Ari also had the draw odds, which meant Michael had to win the game (a draw meant a win for black) if he was to win the title. The Armageddon game was tense, but Michael was able to secure the win and thus earn the title of 2018 MCC Blitz Champion.

It was noticed that some of the players were taking videos of the Armageddon playoff, so maybe one could find a video of the game posted online.

A big congratulations to all the players in the tournament and well done to arbiter Giles Lean and Chris Kolak for smoothly running the event.

Final Standings can be found at Tornelo here:

Some ''dramas'' unfolded close to the end of the tournament. It was a 3-horse race (myself, James and Ari) with James leading from me by half a point and Ari by a point. When he suddenly suffered a couple of losses - I became an undeserving sole leader...but not for long! Then it was my turn not to win against someone rated several 100s of points below me.

Overall, must be said - it was a fun event. Great way for the New MCC President and committee to get started in their new roles in the club!
