2017 Fide World Rapid and Blitz Championship, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

    http://www.fide.com/component/conten...ouncement.html

Being held from December 26 to December 30.

I can understand if you did not know this event was going ahead, with the enormous widespread publicity of all the main chess websites for the event

I only found out about it through fb by complete accident and then Shaun Press's blog post, with the usual issues associated with an event held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

even participants have been complaining that they were not aware who the entrants are! Lots of secrecy surrounding the event

Should also be mentioned that Israeli chess players have been banned from participating!

Hey Bill, the starting of 2nd round (in both the Open and the Ladies sections), was delayed for quite a few minutes due to Magnus's arriving late.
I know you would have started the clocks on time!
The question is would you have reminded him that "The Force can have a strong influence on the weak-minded"?

(As noted by Shaun Press, weak, especially the complete lack of mention re Israel.)

Even if half of the nations would be admitted - most choess players would turn up and Fide would not care. This is one of the reasons I am so skeptical about problems of FIDE ever being resolved. Chess players are mostly spineless!

Anand gets revenge on Carlsen with long-diagonal attack, but Carlsen beat Nepomniachtchi by landing him with two sets of doubled bishop-pawns who has been a very difficult opponent.

22yo Vladimir Vasilyevich Fedoseev is leading with 8/10 (+6 -0 =4) but hasn't played Carlsen; Wang Hao, Viswanathan Anand, Peter Svidler 7.5/10, Carlsen two groups further down and a point further behind with 6.5/10 (+6 -2 =1).

Carlsen is on 7/10 (+6 -2 =2). He still has some chances.

Amazing effort by Magnus to win a totally drawn (and almost equal) endgame against Fedoseev!

A disgraceful incident at the FIDE World Blitz Championship on Friday. Russian GM Inarkiev, in a losing position against world champion Magnus Carlsen, made an illegal move and then claimed victory when Carlsen replied because, said Inarkiev, Carlsen's move was illegal! Eventually, the arbiter decided they should continue the game from before Inarkiev's illegal move, but as you can read in the transcript below, even in the very unlikely circumstance that his illegal move was inadvertent, the Russian GM stuck to his absurd demand and was later forfeited for not playing on.

Yes, it's blitz chess, a spectacle that is often chaotic, but this isn't a pub or a park, where a hustler exploits every angle. This is a world championship, and against the world champion himself. Inarkiev should have been disqualified for such behavior. The rules of chess are simple enough, but there are also rules of decency and sportsmanship. (In that line, Carlsen's emotional reaction was excessive, if understandable under the preposterous circumstances.)

Note that this event itself already disgraced by being held in Saudi Arabia, where Israeli players were not permitted to attend and where the many women players must be covered to leave the hotel. This venue to many top players, including defending champion Anna Muzychuk, to boycott. FIDE has already held major official events in Gadhafi's Tripoli and in Tehran, with similar discriminatory practices. By always putting short-term money ahead of everything else, the politicians bring disgrace upon chess even greater than moments like this one.
