RIP GM Fr. William James Joseph Lombardy (4 December 1937 – 13 October 2017)

GM Lombardy has died aged 79, probably of a heart attack. He might have been most famous as Bobby Fischer's second in his victorious 1972 match with Spassky, helping to persuade Fischer to stay the course. But Lombardy was a big talent himself: the only player to win the World Junior with a perfect score (1957, also the first American to win it). Then in 1960, he led the USA team to victory in the World Student Team Championship in Leningrad, beating Spassky on home turf on the way to a gold medal with 12–1. However, he was overshadowed by his friend Fischer.
“If Algeria introduced a resolution declaring that the earth was flat and that Israel had flattened it, it would pass by a vote of 164 to 13 with 26 abstentions.” — Abba Eban on the UN general assembly

“You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.” — Obi-Wan Kenobi on the UN kakistocracy

A great loss. It is very sad that he had to endure such dreadful circumstances in his final years, especially given his contributions to chess.

RIP Father Bill. Yes he features prominently in my various books about Fischer and "that match".

He also featured prominently in the movie "Pawn Sacrifice", since it was about the Fischer-Spassky match. Spassky couldn't stand the movie, but Lombardy (the only other major character still alive) doesn't seem to have had an opinion on it.
