It is sad to hear about the passing of Malcolm Pyke.

When I first met Malcolm in 1993, I was a bit apprehensive about his Bohemian image and hesitated for a few seconds before I shook his hand. He had very long hair tied into a pony tail, a goatee beard tied with a rubber band, a beret on his head and a long winter coat.

After a few casual conversations with him over the ensuing months, I realised that he was a very pleasant and polite man.

Malcolm was a stalwart member at The Melbourne Chess Club for over two decades. During the time when my son was a member of that chess club, Malcolm would phone me to inform me about an upcoming chess tournament and asked whether my son would be able to play in that tournament. We would have a short conversation to exchange pleasantries on the phone and whenever we met at the chess club. I was appreciative of his time and efforts.

I am glad to note that his dedication towards chess, rewarded him when he won the 2008 Melbourne Club Championship and permanent recognition on the Club's Honours Board.

The last time I saw Malcolm was at the 2016 Australian Chess Championship held at Fitzroy Town Hall, Melbourne.

    Rest in Peace, Malcolm Pyke.

    How tragic and sad...

He always seemed to be in such good spirits from the little I knew of him over the years.

Though I like to hope that as a man of such an eternally optimistic and loving character and as someone who believed in Christian values, he was not someone who feared death or the afterlife.

    RIP Malcolm

Perhaps next year's MCC Australia Day Weekender should become the Pyke Memorial.

His passing has many similarities to that of Jerry Smyrk. Both chess players from the Bayside suburbs in the South East, similar age, died unexpectedly far too young and healthy, whilst overseas (Jerry died in a traffic accident whilst teaching in Taiwan a few years back).

I played my first ever full-length game of club chess against Malcolm, in a Frankston vs Mentone match, I was intimidated by his 'lofty' rating of about 1500, and he duly crushed me. Twenty one years later, I played him a second time this time his 2200 rating didn't bother me too much as I had just crushed Kevin Sheldrick the round before. My confidence did nothing to help me however, and Malcolm gave me another drubbing.

    RIP.

An announcement was made on Monday prior to the start of round 3 of the MCC Championship that the MCC's next Monday night tournament will be renamed in Malcolm's memory.

Further details about the tournament will be provided in due course.

    Can't believe it.
I'll always remember him as a real gentleman.
Always dressed in an immaculate 3 piece suit,
always ready with a nice joke and a quick wit,
and always smoking those super-strong hand made cigarettes.
    "Requiescat In Pace", man.

Wow, I've just seen this. Hard to believe. A larger than life character, kind, funny and generous.
    RIP
