    2017 Australian Blitz Championship

    Hi to all,

I thought I would create a separate thread for the Blitz Championship, given the potential for certain topics to get the Australian Open thread slightly off-topic.

IM Brodie McClymont won the title with 9/11, ahead of four players with 8.5/11.

    Results to follow, and thanks.

    Michael.

One small note - I did not stand as Chief Arbiter for this event; that position was assumed by NA Kevin Bonham. As a member of the organising committee, however, I would like to sincerely thank all the players (and we had an excellent and strong turnout) for competing, and also for staying late. See you all tomorrow.

Looks like the lightning that we played with Brodie at the start of the Australian Open was pretty useful. Whohaa I have a plus score against the Australian lightinig champion this year. Did I retire or not?

    Well done, Brodie!

The former. The Australian Lightning Championship is now held annually and anyone can play in it but only Aus citizens or permanent residents can hold the title. The "Australian Open Lightning Championship" title is defunct after I moved a motion to get rid of it a few years ago.

A big congratulations to Brodie for winning his first Australian Chess Title, defeating 3 GM's along the way! Well done mate!
A big thank-you to all players for coming along and making this a great event!
A big thank-you to Kevin Bonham and all the assistants for running this event and to the Appeals Committee for dealing with tricky appeals quite professionally.

PS The next Australian Title will be played with the 3 minute plus 2 seconds time control instead of the 5 minutes with no increment that was played today! This was decided at the ACF Council Meeting that was just held on Saturday night, January6, 2017.

    Well done Brodie!
So what's your excuse? For running like the devil's chasing you?

See you in another life, brotha.

See you all tomorrow.
What was the reason for you Michael to stand down?

I do not plan to continue monitoring/participating in this thread, so I will be brief. Not possible to run a tournament with a standoff between national administrators and our international guests (at least one of whom played in the World Blitz) over such an important point as when a player is allowed to start making his/her move. I believe a formal opinion has been requested from FIDE to clear this matter up.

I didn't hear the animated discussions going on when Michael was initially announcing the rules (I could see them though!) but after I took over the "standoff" disappeared, so I wonder if something was lost in translation since the content of Michael's announcements and mine as concerned the rules to be applied was exactly the same.

I announced that this was an Australian national title and we were going to apply the rule as we always did in Australia in the past and if anyone from elsewhere was used to a different standard and didn't want to play they were free to withdraw and would get a refund. Nobody did. I had quite a few chats about the rules with GM Adly, who also asked me about various other rules like knocking over a piece and then pressing the clock (which I said I would not apply immediate default for, I would warn the player first). He was happy with what I said and also very sporting after one of those "losses" on time that gives 5/0 a bad name in many circles. I don't think I spoke to any of the other overseas players about the rules but I did see GM Kasparov commented on his blog that (at least according to Google translate!) it was nice to not be having to continually watch the clock to see if the other player had pressed it.

As far as I know there was not one single incident relating to the question of when a player had the right to move. The two most significant incidents were (i) touchmove enforcement against a player who apparently forgot to say "adjust" before centreing an opposing piece (which he could legally capture) on its square and (ii) a dispute about whether or not a move a player had completed was illegal (end of game seen by witnesses but not the arbiters).

It was quite an experience being CA of such a large tournament with strong adult players (having previously almost entirely refereed large junior tournaments and small adult tournaments - nothing on this scale for a very long time) and I was very pleased that Michael still stayed and did the pairings and data input as otherwise I think I would have run out of energy! Also, Michael's idea to print out score slips for the players and have them sign them (common practice in more formal events but I haven't seen it in an Aus Blitz before) was terrific at reducing arguments about previous rounds. One player claimed they had signed for a wrong result in round 1, but didn't notice this til round 5, and I had earlier made it clear that players had to check their score every round, so too bad.

Yes the ACF President has requested a formal opinion from FIDE on rules issues related to the Victorian Blitz, as a number of FIDE officials have already sent informal opinions that contradict each other and in some cases simply don't make sense. He's sent it to three different commissions and the Executive Director so it will be interesting to see what we get back.
