FIDE Womens World Champs knockout Tehran 10/2-5/3

There is a thread for discussing contentious issues about dress codes (and other contentious matters) re this tournament here:
    http://www.chesschat.org/showthread....ot-shenanigans

Mostly I'd like this thread to be kept to event results, the field and so on.

The initial list of qualifiers was posted here: http://www.fide.com/component/conten...mpionship.html

Of these qualifiers it is expected that Hou Yifan will boycott the event and relinquish the title in protest against unsatisfactory aspects of the Women's cycle. Nazi Paikidze is still the only announced boycott over the dress code issue.

WIM Emma Guo qualified to represent Australia but is unavailable. Her place has been taken by WIM Nancy Lane who placed second in the relevant Oceania Zonal.

It looks like Nancy will get a nice easy round one opponent like Humpy Koneru or Nana Dzagnidze!

Mariya Muzychuk has been quoted as boycotting, apparently via a translation of this article:

    http://censor.net.ua/resonance/42245...go_prestijnogo

The translations doing the rounds are along the lines that Iran is unsuitable for such a (supposedly) prestigious competition.

Humpy Koneru not playing either according to Nigel Short. (Reason unknown).

Best wishes to WIM Nancy Lane (my clubmate) for this important tournament. It's knockout, so really would love to see her get more than one match.

The 1-64, 2-63, 3-62 etc pairing system means that she will get someone incredibly strong so it would be a major achievement to get past the first round (by any means other than forfeit, that is).

Best wishes to all of the participants (all 64 of them I will wish one by one separately)...but I think they key issue in this thread so far has been not the ''chess'' component but the participation/non-participation/difficulty with the participation one. Btw, Irina Krush also refused to travel to Iran.

Indeed, though Krush is citing security rather than dress code as the primary concern.

And out of those who are playing...several are not entirely happy..but want the money and/or to have a go at the title.

That is not in rating order. They are qualifier numbers, not seed numbers.

I think Nancy is in fact #64 by seeding and unless something changes will be playing world #2 Ju Wenjun.

Pairings are up on the FIDE website.

    Code:
FIDE announces the first round pairings for the forthcoming Women’s World Championship to be held in Tehran, Iran.

    NAME Seed NAME Seed
    Ju Wenjun	1	-	Lane, Nancy	64
The Force can have a strong influence on the weak-minded.
